But some investors are expecting the yield curve to finally invert, with near-term bonds (2-year Treasuries) yielding more than longer-term ones (10-year notes) as soon as in the middle of next year due to the bloated Fed balance sheet that has distorted bond market dynamics.

China’s trade surplus with the US has surged to a record high, jumping 17% to a record $29b in June, due to higher-than-expected exports of iron ore.
It is the widest gap reported since official figures were first released by Chinese customs officials 20 years ago, despite President Trump tariffs of 10% on $US200 billion worth of Chinese imports due by September.


In addition, China’s Ministry of Commerce described the US investigation of intellectual property abuses as “slanderous, groundless and without legal basis,”
and said that China would continue to “uphold free trade and the multilateral trading system”.

President Donald Trump may be out of the country, but one of the former top lieutenants of the special counsel Robert Mueller’s team, the “lover boy” FBI agent Peter Strzok, was met by a hostile questioning by members of Congress over allegations of bias revealed in a series of text messages he exchanged with Lisa Page, a fellow FBI employee with whom he was having an affair, and has so far refused to testify despite a subpoena by the House oversite committee.

After Mr. Strzok was refused the chance to explain his position, the chair of the House Government Oversight Committee shot back: “I don’t give a damn what you appreciate, agent Strzok. I don’t appreciate having an FBI agent with an unprecedented level of animus working on two major investigations in 2016.”

NASA has announced plans to send a small helicopter to Mars on their 2020 mission, which also aims to place a rover from the latest generation on the planet. The helicopter has two blades that rotate counter to one another and weighs just 4 pounds (1.81 kg). Its main body section, or fuselage, is no bigger than a softball, according to NASA.

Because the atmosphere on Mars is 100 times thinner than Earth’s, the blades will spin at 3,000 revolutions per minute, which is about 10 times faster than the speed of helicopter blades on Earth.

Our agencies’ careful vetting procedures helped prevent the reunification of children with an alleged murderer, an adult convicted of child cruelty, and adults determined not to be the parent of the child. Of course, there remains a tremendous amount of hard work and similar obstacles facing our teams in reuniting the remaining families. The Trump administration does not approach this mission lightly, and we intend to continue our good faith efforts to reunify families.

Below are more details on HHS, DHS, and DOJ progress on reunification, as of 7 a.m. EST, July 12, 2018:

There are 103 children under age 5 covered by the court case. Of the 103 children:

  • 57 children have been reunified as of 7 a.m. EST on July 12; and 
  • 46 children were acknowledged by the court to be ineligible for reunification or determined by HHS, DHS, and DOJ to be ineligible under court-approved criteria.

Of those 46 ineligible for reunification:

22 children have been found ineligible due to safety concerns posed by the adults in question:

  • 11 adults have a serious criminal history (charges or convictions for child cruelty, kidnapping, murder, human smuggling, domestic violence, etc.);
  • 7 adults were determined not to be a parent;
  • 1 adult had a falsified birth certificate;
  • 1 adult was alleged to have abused the child;
  • 1 adult planned to house the child with an adult charged with sexually abusing a child; and
  • 1 adult is being treated for a communicable disease. 

24 children are not currently eligible for reunification due to circumstances of the adults in question:  

  • 12 adults have been deported and are being contacted;
  • 9 adults are in custody of the United States Marshals Service for other offenses;
  • 2 adults are in custody of state jails for other offenses; and
  • 1 adult’s location has been unknown for over a year.
