Mr.Xi arrived in DPRK at the Sunan International Airport around noon, greeted by sunshine over a capital exuding warmth and friendship,  national flags and large welcome banners flying , with nearly 10,000 people lined up at the airport, waving flowers and chanting cheerful slogans to welcome the Chinese guests.
Is the blatant application of American power by President Trump, amplified by merciless tariffs and accompanied by large aircraft carrier groups sailing Sought China Sea atolls  starting to play on Mr.Xi nerves? Is he jealous and suspicious of  his pit bull nephew Comrade Un, who had supposedly developed a “good chemistry” with “bad boy Trump”, secretly smoking American cigarettes and drinking “Bud Light”? Is that why he is opening the border with Russia to trading in local currencies, de-facto snubbing the US dollar? Don’t bet against it?

Rare-earth minerals form the central building blocks of our modern world, used to manufacture smartphones, construct fighter jets and develop cancer treatments, while abundant, they are difficult to refine and to duplicate, with the difficult task left to China, the world’s most dominant producer of rare earths essential to tech devices

China’s total rare earths processing capacity stands at 220,000 tonnes, and for Australia to match China’s 2018 rare earths production, it would need to increase production by 500 per cent, but China is threatening to strangle global supplies in retaliation for tariffs imposed on imports into the United States amid its escalating trade war with President Donald Trump.

Last week, after President Xi Jinping visited a rare earths processing facility, China’s National Development and Reform Commission — Beijing’s guiding economic agency — quoted an unnamed official questioning whether the rare earths trade could be China’s “counter-weapon” against the US.

“If [supply was to constrict] it will cause chaos and mayhem in the US industrial ecosystem, similar in scale to the Huawei bans,” Dr Wilson said, referring to the US trade embargo on the Chinese tech giant.

For Dr. Wilson, this unfolding situation serves as an opportune reminder about the need for countries and manufacturers to get “real” about their economies and diversifying their resource suppliers.

This would have a profound effect on the US, according to Dr. Jeffrey Wilson, an expert in international resource politics at Murdoch University.

Rivers from the Thames in England to the Tigris in Iraq host concentrations of antibiotics exceeding safe levels by up to 300 times, a contamination which could play a role in human drug resistance, a data set supporting the UN declared it a national emergency last year, warning that over 10 million people could die as a result of resistance by 2050, outnumbering the amount of deaths due to cancer, and around 24 million people could be forced out of their homes by 2030.

“Antimicrobial compounds from households, hospitals, pharmaceutical facilities and agricultural run-off released into the environment, combined with direct contact between natural bacterial communities and discharged resistant bacteria, is driving bacterial evolution and the emergence of more resistant strains,” a UN report on antibiotic resistance said.

Samples found antibiotics at 65 percent of the surveyed sites, causing scientists and policy makers to recognize the role of the natural environment in the antimicrobial resistance problem, according to Professor Alistair Boxall, Theme Leader of the York Environmental Sustainability Institute.

“We know very little about the scale of problem globally,” he said.

Trimethoprim, an antibiotic used to treat urinary tract infections, was found most frequently at 307 of the 711 sites, while Metronidazole, which is used to treat skin and mouth infections, was found to be the least safe. (DW)
