The Turkish A-haber TV reported in the early hours of today that the coast guard had helped anchor the cargo ship in the Sariyer Buyukdere area and traffic in the Bosphorus returned to normal. The passage of ships was temporarily blocked to all vessels in both directions at Bosphorus late last week because a freighter broke down near Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge, blocking the strait.

On Monday, Senate Republicans plan to block a key bill to raise the US debt ceiling, a scenario that may result in a government shutdown early next month.
The US government may face the “X Date” in the first quarter of October, when the Treasury Department is expected to “exhaust its cash on hand” to pay its bills, a new analysis has claimed.
According to the forecast by the Washington-based non-profit think tank Bipartisan Policy Centre (BPC), if US policymakers “do not act on the debt limit, Treasury will most likely have insufficient cash to meet all its financial obligations sometime between 15 October and 4 November”.

 The Spanish authorities closed the airport on the island of La Palma because of ash clouds from volcanic eruptions in Spain’s Canaries archipelago, as the volcano Cumbre Vieja erupts again following a week of continuous eruptions.
So far, new openings were reported on the volcano, the 19 September eruption has destroyed 320 buildings and 154 hectares of land, and the volcanic activity is likely to last from 24 to 84 days.

German Health Minister Jens Spahn has indicated that rising infections mean it may be impossible to ease restrictions in the coming weeks, hence experts now warn that the rise in cases is “clearly exponential”, and the country may not be able to relax lockdown measures in the run-up to Easter.

Mr. Spahn made his comments as Germany’s Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases warned that case numbers were rising at a “very clearly exponential rate”:

“The rising case numbers may mean that we are unable to take any further steps towards opening up in the weeks to come. On the contrary, we may even have to take steps backwards.” 

Health authorities say highly contagious variants have driven up case numbers in the EU’s biggest country, which is entering a third wave of the disease.

“We can no longer be punished for our geographical position,” Malta’s Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said, as EU foreign affairs secretary’s from Cyprus, Greece, Italy,  and Spain met in Athens to call for changes to the EU’s pact on migration and asylum, pushing for an EU-wide repatriation mechanism, saying a proposed overhaul of migration rules does not go far enough.

Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Malta and Spain took part in the talks ahead of an EU summit later this week which is expected to focus on EU-Turkey relations. The five EU members have extensive Mediterranean coastlines and are the most common targets for migrants from North Africa and the Middle East, and Turkey, which hosts more than 3.5 million Syrian refugees, agreed to take back migrants not entitled to EU protection in return for billions of euros in aid.

But migrant groups say the pact signed with Brussels in 2016 has serious flaws. The EU is planning to reform the deal.

Lava at Fagradalsfjall burst through a crack in the Earth’s crust hundreds of meters long and a series of small fountains turned the night sky red, and despite that Icelanders had been bracing themselves for an eruption for several weeks, after the island nation recorded more than 50,000 recent earthquakes, so far the eruption has not spewed out much ash, and no major disruption is expected.

Meteorologists said the event was small and no-one was in danger, with the last recorded  eruption there was some 800 years ago.
