ANKARA — Turkey reported 43,301 new COVID-19 cases, including 2,703 symptomatic patients, as the total number of positive cases in the country reached 4,710,582, with the the death toll from the virus rose by 346 to 39,057, while the total recoveries climbed to 4,167,263 after 45,592 more cases recovered in the last 24 hours.

The rate of pneumonia in COVID-19 patients stands at 2.4 percent and the number of seriously ill patients is 3,549 in the country, said the ministry, a total of 282,192 tests were conducted over the past day, with the overall number of tests in Turkey reaching 46,435,343.

Tens of thousands of Uighurs have fled to Turkey to escape Chinese persecution, but life in exile has not been easy, in fact quite challenging, as reported by witnesses who have found asylum in Turkey:

“I lost touch with my family five years ago; I only learned of my father’s death one year later,” a teary-eyed man tells DW. The 32-year-old is based in Istanbul’s Zeytinburnu neighborhood, where most of the city’s Uighur immigrants live and work, earning a living working in a secondhand shop for mobile phones.

He is one of approximately 50,000 Uighurs who have recently fled China seeking safety in Turkey, as the Chinese government has been persecuting the ethnic minority, with witnesses reporting that Uighurs have been detained in inhumane conditions in reeducation camps, and many of them, including minors, are picked up and deported without warning.

Some seven hundred and eighteen members accused of being part of a Kurdish militant group that Turkey said executed 13 of its citizens in northern Iraq, are now under detention, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan assailing the new US administration for failing to immediately accept its version of the incident, as the mass arrests were announced a day after Ankara said Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) rebels had executed the 13 captives, blaming Turkish airstrikes on their bases for their deaths, with most of the captives being soldiers and police abducted in southeast Turkey and kept in an Iraqi cave.

The PKK has been waging an insurgency against the Turkish state since 1984 thought to have left tens of thousands dead.
