The US is on course to encounter the highest number of people trying to cross its southwest border in the last 20 years, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas acknowledged on 16 March, while the White House is still in denial about the border crisis.

Earlier this week, DHS head Alejandro Mayorkas embarked on a trip to El Paso, Texas together with a bipartisan group of American lawmakers. The press was not allowed to cover the delegation’s visit, however, having returned from the tour Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) said that “it was stunning to see how many people, including unaccompanied children, unlawfully crossed the border.” Citing border patrol agents, he said that a processing facility in Paso del Norte is dealing with a 150-200 percent increase in migrants.

Scientists at Greifswald teaching hospital claim they have discovered the reason for blood clots among a small number of AstraZeneca vaccine recipients, and doctors say a targeted treatment can now be used, with the investigation showing how the vaccine caused rare thrombosis in the brain in a small number of patients.

This means that targeted treatment can be offered to those who suffer similar clotting, using a very common medication.

The success was a result of cooperation between the Greifswald hospital, state health regulator the Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI), as well as doctors in Austria — a nurse there died from thrombosis in the brain after being vaccinated with the AstraZeneca jab.

Traffic restrictions are in place during the curfew, while businesses in the busy South Beach area must close.

Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber said thousands of tourists had brought “chaos and disorder” to the city:

“It feels like a rock concert, wall-to-wall people over blocks and blocks,” said Mr. Gelber .

Spring break is a holiday period for schools and universities in the US that usually takes place in March or April. It attracts thousands of students to Florida and other warm-weather destinations around the country.

Officials warned tourists to “vacation responsibly or be arrested” prior to the holiday period, and a county-wide midnight coronavirus curfew was already in place due to the pandemic.

But the Miami Beach area was thronged with revellers over the weekend, and many did not appear to be wearing masks or socially distancing.

German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer announcement that the German government is considering a ban on almost all international air travel in an effort to stop the spread of new, more virulent strains of the coronavirus is no surprise to the COVID19 pandemic observers:

That includes significantly stricter border checks, especially at borders with high-risk areas, but also reducing air travel to Germany to almost zero, as Israel is currently doing,” Mr. Seehofer said, despite reports that German Chancellor Angela Merkel requested that he look into ways the country could defend itself against the spread of mutations.

On Tuesday, Merkel told lawmakers she was opposed to an all-out travel ban, while at the same time calling for a halt to tourism as the pandemic continues to spread.

Scientists in California believe there is a homegrown coronavirus mutant in the state that could be responsible for the dramatic rise in cases, as two separate research groups have discovered the apparent California strain while looking for the new variant that is believed to have come from the United Kingdom, with the supposed strain is in the same “family tree” as the UK strain, and could be behind the state’s spread over the past few months.

One of the labs that discovered the strain, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said it amounted to 24 percent of about 4,500 viral samples gathered throughout California in the last weeks of 2020.

Another analysis found that 25 percent of 332 samples taken in Northern California were of the new strain.

The Biden administration has renewed Trump-era Covid-19 travel bans on non-US visitors from Brazil and most of Europe, including the UK and Ireland, as the White House also announced new ban on South Africa over its virus variant, following former President Donald Trump  ordering the bans end on 26 January as one of his final acts in office.

The new travel restrictions came as Minnesota recorded the first US case of the Brazil variant from a resident who had recently travelled to that country:

“This case marks the first documented instance of the Brazil P.1 variant in the United States,” said the Minnesota Department of Health.

The unnamed patient lives in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area, said the department.
