HSI special agents and Mexican authorities discovered the tunnel inside of a residence near the international border and determined that a drug trafficking organization (DTO) dug the approximate 4-foot by 3-foot tunnel nearly 22 feet beneath the ground.

LAREDO, Texas – A California man was convicted for conspiring to transport and transporting noncitizens within the United States, following an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) Laredo Sector assisted in the case. Christopher Faust, 32, from Sacramento, California, was convicted Aug. 11, in U.S. federal court after a jury deliberated fewer than four hours.

At least 1,941 people are known to have died in Haiti in Saturday’s powerful earthquake – a rise of more than 500 on the previous figure, officials say.
Rescue workers have managed to pull 34 people alive from the rubble but many are still missing after the 7.2-magnitude quake.
The search for survivors has been hampered by heavy rains brought this week by Tropical Storm Grace.

The OVW grants will provide resources to local prosecutors, victim service providers, healthcare professionals, training organizations, and academic researchers, including several with national scope. Even with limited prosecutorial authority in domestic violence cases, the federal government remains committed to working with all of its partners to end the scourge of domestic violence.

         Disturbing research shows that intimate partner homicides are common, with roughly 1 in 6 homicide victims are killed by an intimate partner, as in 2019, California law enforcement received 161,123 domestic violence-related calls for assistance, and 47 percent of those calls involved a weapon. Research shows that abusers with a gun in the home are five times more likely to kill their partners than abusers who don’t have access to a firearm.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported  that an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.3 struck New Zealand, and according to the data, the epicenter of the earthquake was located 238 km away from Gisborne, New Zealand, at a depth of 10 km, warning ​tsunami waves were possible within 300 km of the quake’s epicenter, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Tampa, Florida – U.S. District Judge Virginia Hernandez Covington today sentenced Romney Christopher Ellis (57, Indianapolis) to 4 years and 10 months in federal prison for making threats and mailing a dead animal using the U.S. Mail. The court also ordered Ellis not to have contact with any of the victims associated with the case.

Ellis had pleaded guilty on April 23, 2020.

According to court documents, for at least four years, Ellis engaged in a campaign of harassment against a victim residing in Hillsborough County. Between 2012 and 2018, a Hillsborough County judge issued multiple domestic violence injunctions against Ellis on the victim’s behalf. Ellis repeatedly violated the orders, including by stalking and threatening the victim, and, in 2013, was convicted of aggravated stalking.
