The former managing director and vice chairman of a Swiss bank was sentenced to 10 years in prison today, after previously pleading guilty for his role in a billion-dollar international scheme to launder funds embezzled from Venezuelan state-owned oil company Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA).

Matthias Krull, 44, a German national and Panamanian resident, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, on Aug. 22. U.S. District Judge Cecilia M. Altonaga of the Southern District of Florida sentenced Krull to serve 120 months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release. Judge Altonaga also ordered Krull to pay a fine for $50,000 and a forfeiture money judgment of $600,000. As part of his plea, Krull admitted that in his position with the Swiss bank, he attracted private clients, particularly clients from Venezuela, to the bank. In this role, Krull’s clients included Francisco Convit Guruceaga, who was indicted on money laundering charges on Aug. 16. Krull’s clients also included three unnamed conspirators described in the Aug. 16 indictment. Krull admitted that the conspiracy began in December 2014 with a currency exchange scheme that was designed to embezzle around $600 million from PDVSA, obtained through bribery and fraud and the conspirators’ efforts to launder a portion of the proceeds of that scheme. By May 2015, the conspiracy had doubled in amount to $1.2 billion embezzled from PDVSA. PDVSA is Venezuela’s primary source of income and foreign currency (namely, U.S. Dollars and Euros). Krull joined the conspiracy in or around 2016, he admitted, when a co-conspirator contacted him to launder the proceeds of a PDVSA foreign-exchange embezzlement scheme.

The US military will deploy more than 5,200 troops, including armed soldiers, to bolster President Donald Trump’s efforts to secure the border with Mexico as a caravan of migrants treks toward the frontier, a senior US general said.

Train robberies soared by 476% between the first and last quarters of 2017, according to data gathered by Mexico’s Rail Transport Regulatory Agency (ARTF), with 125 robberies on country’s railroads but during the last three months, the figure spiked to 720.

In its latest railroad security report, the ARTF said there were 1,752 train robberies in 2017, with almost half the total occurring in just four states.

Veracruz recorded the highest number with 276, followed by Puebla with 230, Guanajuato with 196 and Querétaro with 122.

“It impacts the economy enormously and then a lot of the importers say: I don’t know if I want to do business in Mexico anymore,” María de Lourdes Aranda, the communications director for Ferromex and Ferrosur said.

A research team in Taiwan has developed a chip with nanoparticles that can detect proteins related to cancer in around half an hour by detecting proteins called tumor markers. However, the proteins cannot usually be detected until they are in a large concentration during the middle and later stages of cancer.

The new technology can detect tumor markers in the bloodstream of cancer patients when they are still in the early stages of the disease. Furthermore, cancer screening in general hospitals usually takes at least one day to test different bodily substances, while the chip requires just five microliters of blood or urine.

Developers are working to use similar technology to detect Alzheimer’s disease.

The People’s Liberation Army Navy is planning to hold live-fire drills in the Taiwan Strait next week, a move that could step up tensions between Beijing and Taipei.

“Live-fire maneuvers will take place… in the Taiwan Strait on April 18, 2018, between 8 a.m. and midnight,” the maritime administration agency of China’s Fujian province said in a Thursday announcement.

On Thursday, President Xi Jinping observed PLA aircraft take off from the Liaoning aircraft carrier, the New Straits Times reports. The video also showed Xi sitting down to join PLA Navy sailors for a meal. Speaking to the sailors, Xi said the requirement to build a more powerful navy “has never been as urgent as it is today.”

Thirty-seven individuals have been charged with federal crimes related to methamphetamine drug trafficking in two separate indictments unsealed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Colorado.

As described in two separate indictments, the drug conspiracy operated within the State of Colorado from dates spanning back as far as July 1, 2015. Separate charges against individual defendants include conspiracy to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute methamphetamine, knowingly or intentionally distributing and possessing with the intent to distribute methamphetamine, intentionally using a communications device in causing or facilitating the commission of a drug felony, and money laundering.

“Meth ravages and ruins the precious lives of too many Coloradans,” said U.S. Attorney Bob Troyer. “Taking out 37 dealers, taking this kind of weight out of our suffering communities, is a major public safety victory. And it’s one we only got because of the exceptional work and partnership we have with the Colorado Attorney General’s Office, the DEA, and many other law enforcement agencies.”
