New research from the United States Studies Centre using the Global database of “Emotion, Language and Ton”, shows that despite the United States having one of the fastest rates of infection in the world in April, the number of in-person anti-government (federal, state and local) protests in the country surged to a level higher than that reached during 2019, the so-called “Year of Global Protest”, with the vast majority of the increase in protests in March to April were in opposition to state enforced lockdowns and stay-at-home orders.
While the protests surged after President Trump’s interventions, it’s clear that he did not cause the anti-lockdown movement himself, as protests in the United States were already rising rapidly, targeting at political enemies has been a common trend not just from Trump’s administration, but more generally in his public life. Researchers have developed a robot that can carry out COVID-19 screening tests safely, giving a break to desperate and overworked healthcare workers from being exposed to risk during the monotonous process of taking samples, a welcome announcement by the the University of Southern Denmark of the development of the world’s first fully automatic robot capable of carrying out throat swabs for COVID-19.
The equipment uses a 3-printed disposable arm that is automatically swapped after each patient. The robot takes a swab with a specially designed disposable tool that hits the exact part of the throat from which the sample should be taken, it then drops the swab into a jar and seals the sample by screwing the lid.
