Israel has the highest vaccination rate in the world, as more than 49% of people have received at least one dose, and now the payoff is coming through  with shops, libraries and museums can open with social distancing and masks are still required, a change the health ministry describes as the first stage of returning to normal life.

The country entered its third lockdown on 27 December after a resurgence of the virus, and under the easing measures, people are now able to enter shopping malls and tourist attractions such as zoos, soon to reopen including gyms, hotels and synagogues. However they require a “green passport”, a certificate that can only be obtained once you have been vaccinated.

The Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) and the ships and aircraft of Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 2, the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group (IKE CSG), departed for deployment Feb. 18, after successfully completing a historic Composite Unit Training Exercise (COMPTUEX), that included a NATO vignette and training with SEALS from an East Coast-based Naval Special Warfare (NSW) Group for the first time in recent history.

“COMPTUEX provided graduate-level training that simulates the full spectrum of operations, low intensity to high-end combat that IKE CSG must be ready for,” said Rear Adm. Scott Robertson, commander, CSG-2.

“The live, virtual and constructive training with a NATO backdrop enabled the team to hone its application of integrated, multiple domain warfare. We are ready to deploy!”

The Boeing 777, with 231 passengers and 10 crew on board, was able to return safely and land at Denver airport, with no injuries were reported, as police in the town of Broomfield posted pictures of what appears to be the front of an engine casing in the front garden of a home, and passengers on board described a “large explosion” shortly after take-off:

Germany’s Robert Koch Institute for infectious diseases reported 7,676 new cases this week, up 1,562 from one week ago, as seven-day incidence rate increased to 60.2 across the country, up from 57.7 a day earlier, and new coronavirus infections rose again, prompting fears ahead of a planned easing of restrictions.

German authorities have repeatedly pointed to a maximum incidence rate of 50 as a target for opening up. However, schools in 10 of Germany’s 16 federal states are scheduled to reopen on Monday, experts blaming more-infectious mutations of the virus for the increase in numbers, with the seven-day R value was put at 1.07, the highest in several weeks, meaning that 100 infected people mathematically infect 107 more people.

RKI head Lothar Wieler called on people to persevere: “False promises don’t help anyone, and it is quite simply the case that … we still have to hold out for a certain amount of time,” he said at a Health Ministry discussion on the subject of vaccination that was broadcast on the internet.

Health Minister Jens Spahn said Germany was in a “really difficult phase” of the pandemic. He said he knew that everyone was tired after 12 months. “A child who is 10 years old has now spent a 10th of his life in the pandemic.”

Spahn said it was socially very important that day care centers and primary schools be able to open again.

The confrontations with the People’s Liberation Army are believed to have occurred as China was conducting its largest-ever naval exercises in the hotly contested waters.

ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations officers arrested 33 fugitives sought for their roles in known or suspected human rights violations during a nationwide operation this week, mostly foreign nationals who all have outstanding removal orders and are subject to repatriation to their countries of origin. Of the 33 known or suspected human rights violators arrested during Operation No Safe Haven IV, eight individuals are also criminal aliens with convictions for crimes including, but not limited to battery, weapons offenses, driving while intoxicated, and resisting arrest. This operation surpassed the number of known or suspected human rights violators arrested during the first nationwide No Safe Haven operation, which took place in September 2014.

“This operation continues ICE’s work to ensure that the United States does not serve as a safe haven for those who commit human rights violations in their countries of origin,” said Thomas D. Homan, Deputy Director of ICE. “We will continue to pursue these individuals as priorities for enforcement— using our agency’s unique authorities to investigate criminal activity and to enforce immigration laws.”

Six state police officers were among 16 people killed last night in violent clashes in two municipalities in the state of Guerrero, with incidents occurring in the Costa Grande region, one in Zihuatanejo, the other in Petatlán.

“In the vicinity of El Coacoyul, a state police patrol car was attacked by about 15 armed civilians who were carrying AK-47-style assault weapons. Public security forces repelled the aggressors and killed three [gunmen],” State security spokesman Roberto Álvarez Heredia said.

He explained that the rest of the armed men then ran to a nearby hill, while the state police called for backup.

“. . . The army, the navy and ministerial police arrived at the location provoking a second confrontation that left a toll of seven civilian deaths . . .” the official said.

In the neighboring municipality of Petatlán, six state police officers were ambushed by civilians also wielding AK-47s, resulting in the deaths of all six men.
