German Health Minister Jens Spahn has indicated that rising infections mean it may be impossible to ease restrictions in the coming weeks, hence experts now warn that the rise in cases is “clearly exponential”, and the country may not be able to relax lockdown measures in the run-up to Easter.
Mr. Spahn made his comments as Germany’s Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases warned that case numbers were rising at a “very clearly exponential rate”:
“The rising case numbers may mean that we are unable to take any further steps towards opening up in the weeks to come. On the contrary, we may even have to take steps backwards.”
Health authorities say highly contagious variants have driven up case numbers in the EU’s biggest country, which is entering a third wave of the disease.

“We can no longer be punished for our geographical position,” Malta’s Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said, as EU foreign affairs secretary’s from Cyprus, Greece, Italy, and Spain met in Athens to call for changes to the EU’s pact on migration and asylum, pushing for an EU-wide repatriation mechanism, saying a proposed overhaul of migration rules does not go far enough.
Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Malta and Spain took part in the talks ahead of an EU summit later this week which is expected to focus on EU-Turkey relations. The five EU members have extensive Mediterranean coastlines and are the most common targets for migrants from North Africa and the Middle East, and Turkey, which hosts more than 3.5 million Syrian refugees, agreed to take back migrants not entitled to EU protection in return for billions of euros in aid.
But migrant groups say the pact signed with Brussels in 2016 has serious flaws. The EU is planning to reform the deal.
