Dashing Dem’s hopes of crushing the last vestiges of Trumpism, all but five Senate Republicans have voted in favor of dismissing his impeachment trial, making clear a conviction of the former president for “incitement of insurrection” is unlikely, as the senators officially opened the trial by taking oaths to ensure ‘impartial justice’ as jurors before the vote.
As many as 45 Senate Republicans backed a failed effort to halt Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, in a sign of party unity and the former president’s continued sway over the GOP, a move that makes clear a conviction of Trump for “incitement of insurrection” after the deadly Capitol siege on January 6 is unlikely.
Republican Senator Rand Paul made a motion on the Senate floor that would have required the chamber to vote on whether Trump’s trial in February violates the US Constitution.
The Democratic-led Senate blocked the motion in a 55-45 vote.

Since 1996, survivors of the Nazi regime and world leaders have been invited to address the German Bundestag each year on January 27 to commemorate the Holocaust, and not surprisingly they focus on contemporary issues.

Genocide is the appropriate word to describe the systematic annihilation of 6 million Jews between 1939 and 1945, as in Israel, “Shoah,” meaning “catastrophe” or “great misfortune,” is used to describe the event, and in the outside world, this crime against humanity is called the Holocaust, derived from the Greek for “sacrificially burned.”
The attempt to adequately put this betrayal of humanity perpetrated by Germans into words will always be a challenge. This is also reflected in the official designation of the “Day of Remembrance for the Victims of National Socialism,” which was introduced by then-German President Roman Herzog.
At the launch, President Herzog said that “Victims of the Holocaust” would have been “too narrow a term, as Nazi racial policies affected more people than just the Jews.” The chosen date was January 27, the day the Nazi extermination camp Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet soldiers in 1945.

As Pfizer has cut its production, and AstraZeneca announced it would be delivering 60% less than agreed with the EU, the continent lagging behind with its vaccination campaign with application centers ready to roll, but The European Union is well behind many other places in the world in its rate of inoculating people against the coronavirus, the bloc’s vaccination campaign grappled with organizational problems; now, it is facing a shortage of vaccines.
The European Commission had signed contracts with eight manufacturers for a total of about 2 billion doses. But so far only, BioNTech-Pfizer has managed to deliver the goods, and even the US company temporarily cut back its production at the end of January.
AstraZeneca, for its part, plans to deliver only 40% of the announced doses in the first quarter. Are other countries receiving more vaccine doses than the EU, or has the bloc signed the wrong contracts?
