CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – A 22-year-old Houston man, identified as Maksim Klopovs admitted that he was to be paid for picking up a large load of electronics originally set for delivery to a college in Corpus Christi, after the shipment left the warehouse in Illinois, someone changed the delivery instructions using an online system, and rather than deliver it directly to Del Mar College, the shipping company was asked to hold the load at their Corpus Christi warehouse for pickup.

Klopovs is scheduled to be sentenced on April 6, facing up to 10 years in federal prison and a possible $250,000 maximum fine.

The indictment charges King with one count of conspiracy to commit mail, wire and securities fraud; seven counts of wire fraud, 10 counts of mail fraud, one counts each of conspiracy to obstruct and obstruction of a Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) investigation; and conspiracy to commit money laundering.

The former chief of Antigua’s Financial Services Regulatory Commission has been extradited from Antigua to face charges for his alleged role in connection with the Stanford International Bank (SIB) $7 billion investment fraud scheme.

A federal jury found Stanford guilty in June 2012 for his role in orchestrating a 20-year investment fraud scheme in which he misappropriated $7 billion from SIB to finance his personal businesses.

Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division and US Attorney Ryan K Patrick of the Southern District of Texas made the announcement.

The indictment alleges King accepted more than $100,000 in bribes from Stanford in exchange for ignoring the actual value of SIB’s assets.

A 1946 translation error put the USS Grayback last plot in a wrong place, but the Tambor-class submarine that sank 14 ships during WWII was found in Japanese waters, 75 years after it sank with 80 sailors on board.

The US navy officially verified the discovery of the lost submarine off the coast of Okinawa in June, where the USS Grayback went down in the East China Sea during its 10th patrol mission in February 1944 and, and according to Japanese reports, “exploded and sank immediately.”

The expedition’s Japanese historian and researcher Yutaka Iwasaki re-translated the original documents and discovered the mistake, giving the team a new area to focus on.

The Tambor-class submarine sank 14 ships during the war, and was one of 52 US submarines lost in action.

ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents, working jointly with officers of the Puerto Rico Police Department in Arecibo and the Puerto Rico Bureau of Special Investigations, arrested 11 individuals Thursday for drug trafficking and possession of illegal arms.

The indictment alleges that between on-or-about May 2018 and November 2018, the organization distributed cocaine, crack, heroin, and marijuana, all within the real property comprising the Villa Evangelina Public Housing Project located in the Municipality of Manatí. The 14 defendants are each facing one count of conspiracy to possess firearms in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and one count of possession of firearms in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime, aiding and abetting.

A former South Texas police officer identified as Geovani Hernandez, 45, from Weslaco, Texas, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison following his cocaine-trafficking conviction in March.

“This sentence serves as a sobering reminder about the serious consequences for those who violate the public’s trust,” said Shane Folden, special agent in charge, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI San Antonio.

“HSI will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners to target and investigate those who exploit their positions for financial gain.”

 In imposing the sentence, the court ruled Hernandez abused his position of trust to facilitate the drug trafficking offense and obstructed justice when he attempted to intimidate both the case agent and confidential informant to prevent them from testifying at trial.

A criminal complaint was unsealed today in federal court in the Eastern District of New York charging Ruslan Maratovich Asainov, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Kazakhstan with providing and attempting to provide material support, including training, services and personnel, to the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist organization, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 2339B.  Asainov was detained overseas by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and recently transferred into FBI custody.  Asainov’s initial appearance is scheduled for this afternoon before United States Magistrate Judge Steven M. Gold at the United States Courthouse, 225 Cadman Plaza East, Brooklyn, New York.

“The United States is committed to holding accountable those who have left this country in order to fight for ISIS,” said Assistant Attorney General Demers. 

“As alleged in the court filings, Asainov traveled overseas, joined ISIS, and became a fighter and a sniper for the terrorist organization.  He was ultimately detained overseas, turned over to the FBI, and will now face justice in an American courtroom.  We hope countries around the world, including our European allies and partners, will likewise repatriate and prosecute their own citizens for traveling to support ISIS.”
