Deaths in the state of New York have surpassed 10,000, as sectors of Spain re-open for business, and Serbia arrested the head of an aged care center over a coronavirus outbreak among elderly residents.
State-wide deaths in New York from coronavirus have risen to 10,056, up from 9,385 from a day earlier, Governor Andrew Cuomo said, after the state became the epicenter of the outbreak in the United States, with recorded more than half a million infections, and more than 22,000 deaths across the country.
In addition, New York City is in danger of running out of swabs for COVID-19 tests, and is urging medical providers to continue testing only patients who are gravely ill, the city health department said in a memo to health care providers:
“As the swab supply continues to decline, there is a real possibility hospitals will completely run out”.

The sailor was moved to an isolation house on Guam after testing positive, where he was found unresponsive on 9 April ,and died on 13 April, following the mass testing of the crew, as over 500 sailors on the USS Roosevelt have tested positive for the virus.
DOD ‘block heads” fired the ship’s captain after his letter pleading for help with the outbreak was leaked to US media.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt is currently stationed in Guam, with sailors quarantining ashore. The name of the sailor who died has been withheld by the Navy until the family is notified.

A new data-driven mathematical model of the novel coronavirus pandemic predicts that the United States will peak in the number of active COVID-19 cases around April 20, which marks a critical milestone on the demand for medical resources, according to a University of Washington study:
“We predict that the United States is on course to reach this point in the coming weeks. It is a point of maximum strain on a country’s health and medical infrastructure”, said Ka-Kit Tung, a professor of applied mathematics at the University of Washington.
The U.S. outbreak will taper off in the first week of June with projections of 710,000 total cases but could be up to 990,000; and 28,000 deaths, but could be up to 39,000, if the current U.S. fatality rate of 4 percent holds, according to the analysis.
The predictions differ significantly from the Imperial College London projections of a longer outbreak with 40 percent to 80 percent of the U.S. population infected and 1.1 to 2.2 million deaths. The results from the model used by Imperial College London differed significantly because it relied on separate assumptions about COVID-19, and the predictions were generated when key parameters, such as its infection rates, were unknown, according to Tung.

Chinese officials have allegedly imposed limits on academic publications regarding COVID-19 tracing, according to a notice that was posted on April 9 on the website of Fudan University’s School of Information Science and Technology.
According to the notice, which was taken down but is still available in an archived form, academic papers regarding the coronavirus and virus tracing will now require strict vetting. The notice also stated that academic papers related to COVID-19 must first be approved by the university’s academic committee before they can be published:
“Other papers related to the new coronary pneumonia epidemic should be reviewed by the academic committee of the college, and after the academic value and timing of the papers are in place, put forward opinions on whether to publish them at home and abroad. The publication of papers must adhere to the bottom line of biosecurity, and matters related to the management of human genetic resources must be examined and approved in strict accordance with regulations. The release of the results of the vaccine should be in line with the schedule and cannot be exaggerated; the drug efficacy evaluation and clinical experience should be summed up in time to form a high-quality paper”.
