LOS ANGELES – An Orange County man has agreed to plead guilty to federal criminal charges that he operated an illegal virtual-currency money services business that exchanged up to $25 million – including on behalf of criminals – through in-person transactions and a network of Bitcoin ATM-type kiosks.
Kais Mohammad, 36, a.k.a. “Superman29,”, of Yorba Linda, was charged in a three-count criminal information filed today in U.S. District Court. In a plea agreement also filed today, Mohammad agreed to plead guilty to one count of operating an unlicensed money transmitting business, one count of money laundering, and one count of failure to maintain an effective anti-money laundering program.
According to his plea agreement, from December 2014 to November 2019, Mohammad owned and operated Herocoin, an illegal virtual-currency money services business. As part of his business, he offered Bitcoin-cash exchange services, charging commissions of up to 25 percent – significantly above the prevailing market rate – for doing so.
Using the moniker “Superman29,” Mohammad advertised his business online to buy and sell Bitcoin throughout Southern California, in transactions up to $25,000. In a typical transaction, he met clients at a public location and exchanged currency for them. Mohammad generally did not inquire as to the source of the clients’ funds and on many occasions, he knew the funds were the proceeds of criminal activity. Mohammad admitted that he knew at least one Herocoin client who was engaged in illegal activity on the dark web.

A former U.S. Congressman, identified as Michael “Ozzie” Myers, 77, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was charged in an indictment unsealed today, with conspiring to violate voting rights by fraudulently stuffing the ballot boxes for specific candidates in the 2014, 2015, and 2016 primary elections, bribery of an election official, falsification of records, voting more than once in federal elections, and obstruction of justice.
He is charged with conspiring with and bribing the former Judge of Elections for the 39th Ward, 36th Division, Domenick J. Demuro. Demuro, who pleaded guilty previously in federal court in Philadelphia, was responsible for overseeing the entire election process and all voter activities of his division in accord with federal and state election laws.
“Free and fair elections are the hallmark of our system of government,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Brian C. Rabbitt of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.
“The Department of Justice has zero tolerance for corruption of the electoral process, and we will spare no effort in investigating and prosecuting those who would seek an unfair advantage at the polls by bribing state and local officials responsible for ensuring the fairness of our elections.”
“Voting is the cornerstone of our democracy. If only one vote has been illegally rung up or fraudulently stuffed into a ballot box, the integrity of that entire election is undermined,” said U.S. Attorney William M. McSwain of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. “Votes are not things to be purchased and democracy is not for sale. If you are a political consultant, election official, or work with the polling places in any way, I urge you to do your job honestly and faithfully. That is what the public deserves, it is what democracy demands, and it is what my office will enforce.”

President Trump cancelled the Republican party convention in Florida, citing the coronavirus “flare-up” as US cases passed four million:
“It’s not the right time for that,” he said, adding that he would still give a convention speech in a different form, as some Republican delegates will still gather in Charlotte, North Carolina, the original venue for the convention.
Mr. Trump had moved part of the event to Florida because of social distancing rules introduced by North Carolina, and at that half-day event on 24 August, the president will be formally nominated by his party to be its standard-bearer in November’s presidential election.
Mr. Trump pointed out at White House coronavirus briefing that safety was his main concern in calling off the four-night extravaganza:
“It’s a different world, and it will be for a little while,” the president said, adding that he “just felt it was wrong” to put tens of thousands of attendees at risk.
“We didn’t want to take any chances,” he told reporters. “We have to be vigilant. we have to be careful and we have to set an example.”
