The Chinese navy is now in possession of the largest missile destroyer in Asia and the second-largest in the world, following the commission of the Type 055 destroyer Nanchang, as it officially joined the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) in a Sunday ceremony in Shandong’s port city of Qingdao, following sea trials that the advanced warship completed last year,and has been working with the fleet since it was launched in 2017.

“Nanchang made an appearance at the parade as part of the celebration, but much of its equipment – including radars, communications and weapons systems and other works – had not actually been finished,” a PLA insider disclosed about the warship’s participation in April 2019 celebrations commemorating the 70th anniversary of the PLAN’s founding.

Weighing in at 13,000 tons of displacement, the 540 fee-long Type 055 is the largest such warship in Asia and the second-largest in the world after the US Navy’s Zumwalt-class destroyers, which are slightly larger at about 15,000 tons. That’s nearly one-third larger than the US Navy’s staple destroyer, the Arleigh Burke-class, and twice the size of Russia’s Sovremenny-class destroyers. It has an estimated 30-knot top speed, according to Jane’s, roughly comparable to the other two warships.

Last week, Iran launched a cloud of ballistic missiles on American forces at the Ayn Al-Asad Air Base and a facility in Erbil in Iraq in retaliation for a US drone strike that killed a top Iranian general on 3 January.

The video showed concrete slabs scattered across the area and several dilapidated dwellings housing US military personnel.

The clip also caught an undamaged spate of Saddam Hussein-era bunkers, in which US servicemen hunkered down and survived the missile attack.

Australian firefighters said that the large “megafire” with an area of around 1.5 million acres, which formed along the border between the Australian states of Victoria and New South Wales last week, is finally under control. However, the rainfall forecast for next week is unlikely to put out the hundreds of remaining fires.

The megablaze formed near Tooma, a village community in the eastern part of the Riverina and southwest of Canberra, last week. On Monday, New South Wales Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons commented on the enormous fire, noting that there was a “small area of burning still to complete” but that the “containment prognosis looks promising,” AFP reported.

“It will absolutely bring a bit of relief this week for the community. But in saying that, we want people to remain vigilant, these fires are certainly not out,” she added.

Mr. Trump’s  White House said the tweet was intended to show Democrats were “almost taking the side of terrorists”, but US Muslim groups say there is “no place” for bigoted jokes.

The manipulated photo shows House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer in Muslim garb with the caption: “The corrupted Dems trying their best to come to the Ayatollah’s rescue #NancyPelosiFakeNews.”
