Former vice-president Joe Biden will not travel to the Democratic convention in Wisconsin to accept the party’s presidential nomination, due to the coronavirus pandemic, but instead would accept via a national address in Delaware, his home state, with the convention had been planned for 17 to 20 August in Milwaukee, but will now be almost entirely virtual, as he will face Donald Trump in the US presidential election on 3 November.

President Trump said he would “probably” give his Republican presidential nomination speech live from the White House later this month. The Democratic National Committee (DNC) said decisions about Mr. Biden’s speech were made in order to protect the local community in Milwaukee, and the people involved in setting up the convention.

“From the very beginning of this pandemic, we put the health and safety of the American people first,” said DNC chairman Tom Perez.

Local Wisconsin officials are still expected to deliver speeches at the convention center, but high-profile Democrats including Barack and Michelle Obama are expected to appear via video link.

The residents of Beirut woke up facing the reality of the trauma and rage triggered by the massive explosion that tore through the city the day before, with the country already facing hyperinflation, a growing coronavirus pandemic and a hunger crisis, following a disclosure by Lebanese officials who said the tragedy was caused by 2,700 tons of ammonium nitrate stored at the port, leveling a large section of the capital, with the shock wave shattering windows far beyond the immediate area.

A noted Lebanese surgeon who narrowly missed being caught up in the explosion, described the situation overnight as a “war scene, it was apocalyptic,” with patients piled up in the emergency room of the hospital where he works in the suburb of Achrafieh.

“We operated on some people, we didn’t know their names, didn’t know who they were, if they had any relatives. We’ve seen some horrible things,” Dr. Bteich told DW. 

“Sometimes I’ve had to operate on [technically] dead people, just for the sake of doing so, [and] sometimes children as young as four to five-years old. We’re going to have a lot more casualties, I think.”

While some of the injured were still being pulled from the rubble, the ammonium nitrate thought to have fueled the blast can also have “devastating effects on the human body, and the repercussions can be seen a few years later,” Bteich said.

As of midday Wednesday more than 100 people had died and 4,000 were injured, according to the Lebanese Red Cross.

With large parts of the city also physically demolished, “everybody knows somebody who has been hit by this catastrophe,” Bteich said. “It looked like Hiroshima.”

The Islamic Merkeldom of Germany is already experiencing its second coronavirus wave, and could face an even stronger resurgence as many people ignore social distancing measures, the German doctor’s union warned on Tuesday.

“We are already in a second, shallow upswing,” Susanne Johna, the president of Marburger Bund, which represents doctors in Germany.

The daily number of confirmed cases has increased in recent weeks, with health experts warning that incredible resistance to adherence to hygiene and social distancing rules could spur a widespread wave of new infections:

“There is a danger that we will lose the successes that we have achieved in Germany so far in a combination of repression and longing for normality,” said Johna.

“We all long for normality. But we are in a state that is not normal.” 

She also emphasized the danger of the virus, in her calls to adhere to social distancing measures.

“Many people in Germany have already died from coronavirus,” she said.

“It’s not just a matter of life and death. Many people will be left with permanent damage. They will be limited in their everyday lives because their lungs or kidneys are no longer working so well. Incidentally, this also applies to younger patients. “

According to official figures, there are almost 21,000 intensive care beds in Germany, of which 12,200 are currently free. As of Monday, there were 270 coronavirus patients in intensive care, of whom 130 were on ventilators.

Germany has recorded over 212,000 cases and more than 9,000 deaths.
