As was the case 12 years ago, Joe Biden entered the White House on an economic rescue mission after an historic US and a global recession, then the world reeling from the shock of the financial crisis,  while this time, Mr. Biden’s initial economic agenda is COVID19.

As he enters office, the pandemic is still raging, thousands are dying every day, and jobless numbers are going up, Health is wealth, as Mr. Biden outlined last week what he called his “America Rescue Plan” – a $1.9tn effort to fund universal vaccination and more coronavirus testing, and provide funds for households, business and lower levels of government.

More than half of the figure is earmarked for direct financial relief for families, including $1,400 stimulus checks for most households, as well as significantly increasing and extending unemployment benefits for millions of jobless Americans.

The US president signed an executive order to rejoin the Paris climate agreement as part of a series of “Day One” actions to reverse course on immigration, climate change, racial equity and the handling of coronavirus.

US President Joe Biden signed 15 executive orders on Wednesday, soon after entering the White House following his inauguration. This includes an order rejoining the Paris climate accord, aimed at reversing some of the former President Donald Trump’s policies.
“Some of the executive actions I’m going to be signing today are going to help change the course of the COVID crisis, we’re going to combat climate change in a way that we haven’t done so far and advance racial equity and support other underserved communities” said Biden.
“These are just all starting points.”
Currently, 189 countries have ratified the Paris Agreement, through which states monitor their fossil fuel emissions and work towards reducing carbon pollution. The US left the accord at the behest of Donald Trump, who announced the departure in 2017.
“A cry for survival comes from the planet itself,” Biden said in his inaugural address.

Angela Merkel and Germany’s 16 state premiers decided to keep the lockdown in place until at least mid-February, as the new, tougher measures would also see people wearing filter masks in shops and on public transport, despite existing restrictions had been in place until the end of January, following an agreement between Chancellor Angela Merkel and the leaders of the country’s 16 states to keep the lockdown in place and introduce tougher measures to fight the spread of the coronavirus.
The lockdown, previously set to expire at the end of January, has now been prolonged until February 14, with most shops, schools and non-essential business, such as gyms and sports centers, will remain closed, as the new measures include stricter rules on the types of masks that must be worn in certain public places, and a greater onus on employers to allow working from home.
Although new infections have been decreasing in recent days and the pressure on intensive care units has eased slightly, virologists are worried that more infectious variants, such as the ones identified in the UK and South Africa might spread in the EU country.
“Now is the time to take preventive measures against the threat of this virus,” Merkel told reporters after a meeting with the state premiers.
