The Congress voted to approve a new measure that would significantly increase the dollar amount of federal direct payments the US government previously approved for Americans struggling to make ends meet amid the COVID-19 pandemic, as the US House of Representatives increased the amount offered in the second round of stimulus checks to $2,000 after President Trump referred to the approved $600 direct payments as “ridiculously low,” with the measure clearing the chamber by a vote of 275 to 134, as total of 231 Democrats and 44 Republicans voted in favor of the legislation.

A senior official with the US Department of the Treasury said that should both chambers approve the $2,000 checks, the financial agency will simply add on the $1,400 difference. The $600 direct payments are expected to start rolling out to Americans who fit the bill in the coming weeks.

Cheng Lei is an Australian television anchor for the Chinese Government’s English news channel, CGTN, and now, after two weeks, hardly anyone knew that a prominent Australian television anchor who has worked for the Chinese Government’s English news channel had been detained, leaving her friends worried for not responded to messages for long time, and it wasn’t until Foreign Minister Marise Payne confirmed Australian officials had an “initial consular visit” with Cheng Lei on August 27 that details of what had happened started to appear.

Not surprisingly for dealing with a communist state, Ms. Cheng had been in custody, under China’s “residential surveillance at a designated location” scheme, for at least 13 days at that point, despite charges having yet to be laid against her.

UTS China Studies professor Feng Chongyi told the ABC it was an “arbitrary detention” mechanism that violates international human rights laws:

“Chinese authorities have been routinely using this measure of Residential Surveillance at a Designated Location, the location is usually facilities run by the secret police” he said.
Dr. Feng Chongyi expects Ms. Cheng to be formally arrested and imprisoned.

“The victim is usually held in solitary confinement, sealed off from the outside world for up to six months, and subjected to continuous interrogations, sleep deprivation and other forms of torture.”

Following that Dr. Feng expects Ms. Cheng will be formally detained, arrested and imprisoned.

Chinese-Australian lawyer Hanbing Shen, who is based in Sydney, said usually police can only detain people for 24 hours:

“After 24 hours, if there is no new evidence, they must release them. The only difference in treating foreign citizens is that Chinese public security organs usually inform the consulate or embassy of the country where the citizens are located, so they participate. In previous trials, the staff of the consulate or embassy can attend the trial, but the premise is that the case does not involve Chinese state secrets”, he said.

After months of fierce fires in Australia, the rain is tapering off, but flooding  remain a concern for the Albert and Logan rivers area, south of Brisbane, after heavy falls and further showers across the south-east overnight, with river levels are expected to peak on Friday, and Gold Coast beaches will remain closed on a steamy Valentine’s Day.

Forecaster Shane Kennedy said temperatures would stay above 30 degrees Celsius in the south of the state over the next few days.

“But not expecting the same heavy totals that we have seen over the past few days.”
