After a six-week trial, Yi-Chi Shih, 64, a part-time Los Angeles resident, was found guilty on June 26 of conspiracy to violate the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), a federal law that makes illegal, among other things, certain unauthorized exports.

The electrical engineer was found guilty of multiple federal criminal charges, including engaging in a scheme to illegally obtain integrated circuits with military applications that later were exported to China without the required export license.

  The jury also found Shih guilty of mail fraud, wire fraud, subscribing to a false tax return, making false statements to a government agency and conspiracy to gain unauthorized access to a protected computer to obtain information.

A Border Enforcement Task Force (BEST) team in Baltimore comprised of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers seized 332 pounds of cocaine in the port of Baltimore June 18, while conducting import trade enforcement detecting an anomaly during an x-ray scan of a container of beach chairs from China. Officers also observed that the original security seal lock was replaced with another lock. Officers discovered four large black duffel bags inside the container. The bags contained a combined 125 bricks of a white powdery substance that field-tested positive for cocaine.

The cocaine weighed about 151 kilograms, or about 333 pounds, and has a street value of about $10 million.

The container transited through Panama before arriving in Baltimore. It was destined to an address in Maryland.

Several migrant deaths, coupled with reports of “severely neglected” children at a Texan border patrol station, helped the US House of Representatives to approve a $4.5bn in humanitarian aid for the southern border, but the bill faces a tough path through the Republican-controlled Senate that is working on a rival bill with fewer restrictions on how border agencies can spend the money.

The Democrats’ version, contains several strict rules on how the funds can be used for humanitarian aid only, and “not for immigration raids, not detention beds, not a border wall”, a statement from House appropriations committee chair Nita Lowey said.

Some Democrats expressed concern over providing extra funds for agencies involved in the current situation, including those enforcing President Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy which had last year led to migrant children being separated from their parents.

Two hours after nine armed pirates crashed into the container ship MSC Mandy which had drifted in the Gulf of Guinea,  six crew members, all citizens of the Russian Federation (captain, a senior assistant captain, 3rd mate, boatswain, fitter, and cook) were kidnapped and the ship robbed.

No injuries to the other crew members were reported, and authorities are investigating the matter.

Three men were killed and four wounded in a shooting at a bowling alley in Torrance, California, with witnesses reporting that the shooting erupted from a fight between two large groups of people, whom the police are currently trying to identify following a brawl that a  witness described as a “complete madness”.

The gaming establishment of Gable House Bowl that offers bowling, laser tag, and a full arcade, was the scene of multiple shootings that sent victims with gunshot wounds to hospital emergency rooms, or directly to the city morgue.

Police said that criminal investigators are currently working to identify the suspects involved.
