Attorney General William P. Barr announced the launch of Operation Legend, a sustained, systematic and coordinated law enforcement initiative across all federal law enforcement agencies working in conjunction with state and local law enforcement officials to fight the sudden surge of violent crime, beginning in Kansas City, MO. Operation Legend was created as a result of President Trump’s promise to assist America’s cities that are plagued by recent violence.
Operation Legend is named after four-year-old LeGend Taliferro, who was shot and killed while he slept early in the morning of June 29 in Kansas City, the latest in a string violence to plague Kansas City in recent weeks. Kansas City has already reached 100 homicides this year, a 40 percent increase from last year:
“President Trump has made clear: the federal government stands ready and willing to assist any of our state and local law enforcement partners across the nation responding to violent crime. Operation Legend will combine federal and local resources to combat the disturbing uptick in violence by surging federal agents and other federal assets into cities like Kansas City, a city currently experiencing its worst homicide rate in its history. The United States has passed 3 million confirmed cases of coronavirus, nearly double the next highest country and representing a quarter of all cases worldwide, and 1% of the American population, with health experts suggesting that the sudden rise in cases is not due to an increase in testing, as hospitals are about to run out of testing supplies and intensive care beds. The case numbers have been driven by record daily increases in southern and western states, with newly confirmed infections per day in the US running at over 50,000, after the virus swept through California, Florida and Texas, and twenty states have reported record increases in cases this month.
According to figures compiled by Johns Hopkins University, the US has 3.03 million confirmed cases of coronavirus and more than 132,000 deaths — around double the figures in the next worst-hit country Brazil (1.668 million cases, more than 66,700 deaths).

India’s top health agency has reported that the country should have a coronavirus vaccine ready in time for Independence Day on August 15, but many observers have warned that the short time line is both unrealistic and dangerous, as the director of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Dr. Balram Bhargava, ordered 12 hospitals to begin clinical trials of India’s coronavirus candidate vaccine, Covaxin, with the goal of having it ready for public use by August 15.
Bhargava’s statement contradicted country’s scientific community that had maintained the extraordinarily short time line is unfeasible, as vaccine development takes place over many years. Covaxin is developed by Bharat Biotech, a Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical company, in partnership with the National Institute of Virology, an ICMR laboratory, and the first phase of clinical trials, set to begin this week, will involve a sample of 300 people, and the subsequent phase will add another 700, according to the earmarked hospitals:
“Bharat Biotech is working expeditiously to meet the target. However, the final outcome will depend on the cooperation of all clinical trial sites involved, Non-compliance will be viewed very seriously,” Dr. Bhargava stated.
