1…………> Cuff The Dealers: President Trump
1600 daily
The White House • August 16, 2018
President Donald J. Trump is hosting a meeting of his Cabinet before sitting down with the Secretary of Homeland Security this afternoon.
Punishing drug dealers, not victims
In March, President Trump laid out his three-part plan to combat America’s deadly opioid crisis: reducing demand, cutting off illicit suppliers, and expanding opportunities for proven treatment.
A vital part of the plan is law enforcement’s role in tackling opioid abuse and halting the spread of addiction in our communities. Earlier this summer, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced the launch of Operation Synthetic Opioids Surge (SOS), which embraces a zero-tolerance policy toward synthetic opioid trafficking.
“I sent more than 300 new assistant US attorneys to districts across America, including one to Maine. It was the largest prosecutor surge in decades,” the Attorney General writes. “Having served as a federal prosecutor for 14 years, I know what a difference that can make.”
This operation punishes the right people: distributors of illegal drugs, not the victims suffering from addiction. For these victims, the Trump Administration is pursuing ways to expand evidence-based treatment, such as ensuring that the first responder is supplied with lifesaving medication used to reverse overdoses.
2…………> The Crisis Next Door: Opioid Addiction
Opioids killed more people last year than either car accidents or gun violence. This crisis of addiction can affect any American, from all-state football captains to stay-at-home mothers.
As a result, Americans across the country are feeling the weight of the crisis next door.
Share your story below by uploading a video about how you overcame addiction, volunteered at a recovery center, or worked as a family to help a loved one get on the path to recovery.

3…………> A Quiet Revolution: Rebuilding The Judiciary
Policies can change with each new Administration, but restoring our nation’s courts with judges committed to interpreting the law—not creating it—will benefit Americans for years to come.
Supreme Court nominations get the most attention, and Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the High Court will indeed be a landmark win for conservatives. But given the sheer volume of cases in America, lower courts offer the last word in thousands of rulings each year.
“With little fanfare, [President] Trump and [Senate Majority Leader Mitch] McConnell reshape the nation’s circuit courts,” The Washington Post reported this week.
“With 24 confirmations and 13 vacancies to fill, Trump and the Republicans have the power to install more than 20% of the judges on the nation’s second-highest courts.”
The Senate has already confirmed more of President Trump’s appellate judges than any President during his first two years in office. The result will be a Federal judiciary that is far more committed to the rule of law than to the practice of judges.
4…………> Queen Of Soul: Aretha Franklin
Aretha Franklin, the teenage gospel singer who rose to become the Queen of Soul, selling 75 million records and inspiring generations, has passed away at her home in Detroit surrounded by family and loved ones. She was 76.
“Franklin’s official cause of death was due to advance pancreatic cancer of the neuroendocrine type, which was confirmed by Franklin’s oncologist, Dr. Philip Phillips of Karmanos Cancer Institute” in Detroit.
“In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart,” the statement continued.
“We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins knew no bounds.”
Franklin was known for her powerful voice and for many hits, including Respect, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Chain of Fools and Think.
She won 18 Grammy Awards and became the first female performer inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

5…………> “Enemy of the People”: US Press
More than 300 “Fake news” media outlets have launched a campaign to counter President Donald Trump’s attacks and promote a free press, led by the failing Boston Globe that called last week for a public denouncement of the president’s “dirty war” against the media, using the hashtag #EnemyOfNone.
Mr. Trump has derided media reports as “fake news” and attacked journalists as “enemies of the people.”
UN “yes men and bootlickers” experts have said this raises the risk of violence against journalists.
The initial positive response from 100 news organizations has grown closer to 350 with major US national newspapers and smaller local outlets answering the call, along with international publications like the UK newspaper “The Guardian”.
Starting with the Boston Globe itself, the editorial there, headlined Journalists “Are Not The Enemy”, argued that a free press had been a core American principle for more than 200 years.
The New York Times chose the headline “A Free Press Needs You”, calling Mr. Trump’s attacks as “dangerous to the lifeblood of democracy.” It published excerpts from dozens of more publications beneath.
