A Peoria man identified as Joseph Charles Nolan, 51, was sentenced Jan. 16 to 12 years imprisonment by the Maricopa Superior Court for sexually exploiting a minor, following an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and  pleading guilty to two felony counts, each involving an image of a girl whom doctors estimated to be less than 13-years-old.

He was sentenced by Commissioner Julie LaFave in Maricopa Superior Court also who also ordered him to serve a consecutive term of lifetime probation in addition to requiring him to register as a sex offender.
“Child exploitation investigations are one of HSI’s highest priorities, because children remain vulnerable to online abuse and are deserving of our protection and concern,” said Scott Brown, special agent in charge for HSI Phoenix.

“While many of these perpetrators attempt to shield their illegal activities and hide behind their keyboards, HSI and their law enforcement partners will continue efforts to locate them and bring them to justice. Those attempting to evade law enforcement by hiding in the dark parts of the internet seeking to exploit children or conduct other illicit activity will be found and be held accountable for their despicable crimes.”

Australia’s devastating bush fires season has claimed the lives of three more people —on an aerial water bomber being leased from a North American company, as a large air tanker, a Lockheed C-130, went down near Cooma, in the New South Wales Snowy Mountains on Thursday, killing the crew from aerial fire-fighting company Coulson Aviation.

While Australia has a fleet of about 140 firefighting aircraft, including small and large planes and helicopters, the crash in the Snowy Mountains has cut the number of C-130s in half.

The aircraft was first used for military purposes and has had many other roles over the years, including dropping aid packages, but when it comes to firefighting, they are superior to many other planes because of their load capacity and rear hatch, able to carry about 400o gallons of water or fire retardant, which can be released in one large drop within seconds, or over several smaller drops.
