On China’s navy 70th year since founding, a parade will show off new hardware, including nuclear submarines and destroyers, giving the world’s new superpower a chance to flash its wealth and new-found military muscle, with some ships will be paraded for the first time, military capabilities after years of record economic growth.

While China’s involvement in naval technology  goes back to 549 BC, China’s modern navy was founded on April 23, 1949 by the Communist Party control, and President Xi Jinping is now overseeing a sweeping plan to re-arm the PLA with everything from stealth jets to aircraft carriers as China cranks-up its presence in the South China Sea and around Taiwan, which Beijing considers a rogue Chinese territory.

Last month, Beijing unveiled a target of 7.5 per cent rise in defense spending for 2019, a slower rate than last year but one that still outpaces China’s economic growth target.

“The PLA Navy ship and aircraft to be revealed are the Liaoning aircraft carrier, new types of nuclear submarines, new types of destroyers, as well as fighter aircraft,” Deputy naval commander Qiu Yanpeng  said.
