| Eleven individuals are facing federal drug charges in multiple indictments unsealed May 30 targeting a large, multi-state drug trafficking organization based in Mississippi, following a joint investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics.
According to court documents, the indictments resulted from an extensive Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) investigation dubbed Operation Highlife. The Mississippi-based drug trafficking organization is charged with distributing more than 40 kilograms of methamphetamine, more than 3 kilograms of cocaine and over 100 pounds of marijuana illegally smuggled into the U.S. from Mexico across numerous states to include Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, Texas, Tennessee and California. |

Additional convictions included driving under the influence, fraud, harboring aliens, illegal entry and re-entry to the United States, resisting an officer, traffic offenses, trespassing and workman’s compensation fraud. Howard remains in federal custody pending his sentencing hearing, which has not yet been scheduled.
“All people, regardless of where they worship or which religion they belong to, are entitled to live free from the threat of violence and discrimination,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General John Gore of the Civil Rights Division. “Howard’s threatening and hateful calls were criminal and unlawful. The Department of Justice will continue to hold anyone who commits hate crimes accountable under the law.”

The Coast Guard will hold a decommissioning ceremony Thursday, March 22, at Coast Guard Base Honolulu for the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Sherman (WHEC 720), the Coast Guard’s ninth High Endurance Cutter, launched on Sept. 3, 1968, and was the sixth of 12 Hamilton-class ships built by Avondale Shipyards in New Orleans.
Sherman’s operational resume includes action in the Vietnam War, major drug interdictions, numerous high seas rescue, and it is one of only two Coast Guard Cutters to hold the Vietnam Service Award and the only Coast Guard Cutter to hold the Combat Action Ribbon for action in the Vietnam War. Sherman is the last remaining active U.S. warship in the Coast Guard or Navy to have sunk an enemy vessel in combat.

Two men named Robert Paul Preston and Tom Reed launched a campaign on Jan. 15 to create “New California”, the 51st state of the union by dividing rural California from the coastal cities, citing a list of 40 violations of the law against the state’s government.
It states that a consensus must be reached by the state legislatures of California as well as Congress. The process, according to New California hopefuls, could take up to 18 months.

An Uber self-driving car has hit and killed a woman named Elaine Herzberg, 49, who was walking her bicycle outside the pedestrian crossing on a four-lane road in Phoenix, Arizona, marking the first fatality caused by a fully autonomous vehicle and a potential blow to the technology expected to transform transportation.
The car was in autonomous mode with an operator behind the wheel and police were unsure whether it slowed down before the collision.
“This tragic accident underscores why we need to be exceptionally cautious when testing and deploying autonomous vehicle technologies on public roads,” Democratic Senator Edward Markey, a member of the transportation committee, said in a statement.
Self-driving cars being tested routinely get into fender-benders with other vehicles, when last week, a self-driving Uber crashed with another vehicle in Pittsburgh, local news reported. There were no injuries.

Just over 100 patients took part in the trial, in hospitals in Chicago, Sheffield, Uppsala in Sweden and Sao Paulo in Brazil.
The patients received either haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) or drug treatment.
After one year, only one relapse occurred among the stem cell group compared with 39 in the drug group.
After an average follow-up of three years, the transplants had failed in three out of 52 patients (6%), compared with 30 of 50 (60%) in the control group.
