US Coast Guard authorities detected anomalies while examining seven shipping containers aboard the MSC Gayane, a 1,030-foot Liberian-flagged container ship, ordering the ship to port in South Philadelphia, when unloaded containers from the vessel led to the discovery of truckloads of packaged cocaine in amount of 15,582 bricks, weighting more than 35,000 pounds of a white, powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine.
HSI Philadelphia special agents, in conjunction with the US Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania arrested six crew members from the vessel for their involvement in the smuggling operation, and the investigation is ongoing.
Customs and Border Protection (CBP) hosted a joint press conference at the US Custom House in Philadelphia to announce the multi-agency seizure of over 17 tons of cocaine with an estimated street value of about $1.1 billion dollars.
Authorities seized the cocaine as well as $56,330 found on the vessel believed to be proceeds from illegal smuggling activities.

President Trump threatened to obliterate parts of Iran if it attacked “anything American”, a new level of hostilities in a accelerating war of words with Tehran after it condemned the latest US sanctions and called White House actions “mentally retarded.”
President Trump signed an executive order imposing largely symbolic economic sanctions against Iranian Supreme and other senior figures, with punitive measures against Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif expected later this week.
Trump threatened Iran, and introduced previously new US sanctions against Iran’s Supreme Leader, Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who said that they would have no practical impact on the economy.

Iran shot down a US drone last week and Mr Trump said he had called off a retaliatory air strike with minutes to spare, saying too many people would have been killed.

In their search to improve its tactics in countering unmanned aerial systems, the US Marine Corps is now testing the Compact Laser Weapons System (CLaWS) in an effort to provide service members with better options during operations.
Isaac Neal, a Boeing engineer, previously explained in an August 2015 video release that the system can strike targets at a distance of hundreds of meters, and that it essentially eliminates threats by burning parts of the enemy drone.
The Boeing-created system, according to a June 19 release from the service, will be the first ground-based laser approved by the Pentagon for use by Marines.
It is being fitted on the service’s Joint Light Tactical Vehicle.
“Think of it as a welding torch being put on a target,” he said.
