President Trump has been discussing invoking martial law to overturn the results of the 2020 election and seizing supposedly fraudulent voting machines that — according to a wild conspiracy theory being pushed by people invited to the Oval Office to discuss the matter — were used to rob him of a second term, and all this during the final days of his presidency.

It has turned to be the most extreme example of Trump’s post-election behavior, which has grown more erratic and dangerous to our democracy by the day, leading to his supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol in protest while Congress voted to certify Joe Biden’s election victory.

How can he be stopped? 

More than 50 years ago, the framers of the 25th Amendment to the Constitution foresaw the possibility of a president’s behavior becoming so unstable that it would prove necessary to have some constitutional mechanism to remove him immediately from office. Section Four of that amendment provides a process for doing so: If the vice-president and the majority of the Cabinet decide that, for whatever reason, the president has become unfit to carry out the powers and duties of the office and they transmit a letter to Congress to that effect, then the vice-president becomes the acting president and remains so unless and until Congress refuses to allow that transfer of power to stand.

A joint session of Congress confirming electoral college votes has been suspended and forced into recess, with the protesters fighting their way past police lines to breach the US Capitol, shouting and waving pro-Trump and US flags as they roamed through the halls, demanding the results of the presidential election be overturned, and sending members of Congress scrambling for cover under their seats and donning gas masks as tear gas was fired in the Capitol Rotunda.

A woman who was shot during the riot has died, according to US media, and federal law enforcement official said two suspected explosive devices were found, both rendered safe by the FBI and Capitol Hill police.

US President Donald Trump called on protesters to stay peaceful after they stormed the Capitol Building to protest against the Electoral College certification process, which would definitively establish Joe Biden as the next president of the US.

“Please support our Capitol Police and Law Enforcement. They are truly on the side of our Country. Stay peaceful!” Trump tweeted after both the US House of Representatives and the US Senate went into a recess after Trump supporters breached security barricades and entered the Capitol.
