It’s also NASA’s first human spaceflight from US soil in nearly a decade, as two NASA astronauts blasted off into space aboard a rocket ship designed and built by Elon Musk’s SpaceX company.
Veteran space travelers Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral in Florida aboard a sleek, white-and-black, bullet-shaped Crew Dragon capsule on top of a Falcon 9 rocket.
It is the first time that astronauts have been sent into orbit by a private company and is NASA’s first human spaceflight from US soil since the space shuttle program ended in 2011.
The Crew Dragon capsule is bound for the International Space Station, 250 miles above Earth.

Reports are trickling in that the Pentagon raised the alert status of some US military units following the civil unrest around the country, as active-duty US military police officers have been ordered to prepare to deploy if local authorities request their assistance, starting with Minnesota which is currently struggling with people moving in from outside the state.
The Pentagon also noted that some US military units units are now on four-hour recall status, though the Minnesota governor apparently hasn’t yet sent a request for the support of US troop:
“At this time there is no request by the Governor of Minnesota for Title 10 forces to support the Minnesota National Guard or state law enforcement” it said in a statement.
