2………….> US Students Guilty In Killing Italian Policeman

Two US students, identified as Californian residents Finnegan Lee Elder and Gabriel Christian Natale-Hjorth were both given life sentences, after have been found guilty of murdering the police officer Mario Cerciello Rega, 35, who was stabbed to death as he investigated a drug deal gone wrong in central Rome in 2019in Italy following a year-long trial. Elder had admitted to stabbing Rega 11 times but maintained that he acted in self-defense, believing the police officer was a criminal, and Natale-Hjorth, 20, was convicted of helping him to conceal the weapon. Under Italian law, accomplices can also be charged with murder.

The coronavirus pandemic has led to an erosion of basic rights around the world, as the “Atlas of Civil Society” shows that many governments restricted citizens’ freedoms under the guise of fighting the spread of the virus, with report full of examples of restricted freedoms: overcrowded prisons in the Philippines, arrested journalists in Zimbabwe, threatened human rights defenders in Mexico:

“2019 was a year of protests,” said Dagmar Pruin, chairperson of Bread for the World.

“Worldwide, people took to the streets. And this mobilization continued in 2020, for example in the US, or in Belarus.”

A Seattle man identified as Cameron Bennett Scott, 53, pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court in Seattle to three federal felonies connected to his creation and possession of sexually explicit images of children, guilty to enticement of a minor, possession of child pornography, and receipt of child pornography, facing a mandatory minimum 10 years and up to life in prison when sentenced by U.S. District Judge Robert S. Lasnik, July 30. According to the plea agreement, Scott came to the attention of law enforcement in December 2018 when an internet service provider reported an internet address to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) for uploading suspected images of child pornography.

5………….> Scottish Independence Battle: Leaving United Kingdom?

National independence isn’t on the ballot at this week’s Scottish Parliament election — but it’s the issue at the forefront of voters’ minds, and if voters elect a majority of pro-independence candidates on May 6, then they’ll be saying yes to “indyref2” — a second referendum on leaving the United Kingdom. Deny the nationalists parliamentary control, however, and dreams of sovereignty slip away (for now).

Polling suggests the latter is unlikely, with Nicola Sturgeon’s governing Scottish National Party (SNP) on course to win a plurality of seats. Should that come to pass, the party will waste no time in proclaiming a mandate for a fresh referendum.
