China’s total rare earths processing capacity stands at 220,000 tonnes, and for Australia to match China’s 2018 rare earths production, it would need to increase production by 500 per cent, but China is threatening to strangle global supplies in retaliation for tariffs imposed on imports into the United States amid its escalating trade war with President Donald Trump.

Last week, after President Xi Jinping visited a rare earths processing facility, China’s National Development and Reform Commission — Beijing’s guiding economic agency — quoted an unnamed official questioning whether the rare earths trade could be China’s “counter-weapon” against the US.

“If [supply was to constrict] it will cause chaos and mayhem in the US industrial ecosystem, similar in scale to the Huawei bans,” Dr Wilson said, referring to the US trade embargo on the Chinese tech giant.

For Dr. Wilson, this unfolding situation serves as an opportune reminder about the need for countries and manufacturers to get “real” about their economies and diversifying their resource suppliers.

This would have a profound effect on the US, according to Dr. Jeffrey Wilson, an expert in international resource politics at Murdoch University.

True to form, the President took to Twitter to launch a vicious broadside against Sadiq Khan, calling him a “stone cold loser” who was “very dumb” and “incompetent”, mocking his diminutive stature.

While his comments sent numerous journalists into meltdown, the attack was balanced with Trump pledging to be “a great friend” to the UK, and stating he was “looking very much forward” to his visit despite Khan’s comments.

Khan’s Labor party, had planned to boycott the entire visit some weeks prior, a move condemned by government officials and contrary to public opinion — a majority (46 percent) of Britons were in favor of the trip going ahead. Perhaps they wanted a better look at Britain’s “great friend”.

“It’s totally inappropriate for the Labour party to be boycotting this important visit…this is the President of the United States, and we’re celebrating the D-Day landings when we had a million US servicemen in the UK, willing to risk their lives for our liberty, our democracy, our values. According to the 15 count indictment—which supersedes a previously filed indictment—members of the conspiracy used Grindr, a dating app for LGBT people, to create fake profiles and pose as gay men interested in “dates” to lure gay men to an apartment complex in Dallas, Texas, in order to commit violent crimes against them, including kidnapping, assault, robbery, and carjacking.

Members of the conspiracy forced the victims at gunpoint to relinquish their possessions, including their wallets, money, car keys, cars, drivers’ licenses and identification cards, credit and debit cards, and cellular telephones.

If convicted, both defendants face a maximum statutory penalty of life in prison for the hate crime and kidnapping charges, five years for the conspiracy charge, and a fine of up to $250,000 with respect to each charge.

The indictment charges both Jenkins and Henry with kidnapping these four victims and Jenkins with kidnapping two additional victims, carjacking two victims, and using a firearm in connection with the carjackings.
