A U.S. citizen, identified as Thomas Sniffen, 58, a resident of Costa Rica pleaded guilty on all 31 counts of an indictment charging one count of conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud, two counts of mail fraud, 13 counts of wire fraud, one count of conspiracy to commit international money laundering and 14 counts of international money laundering, for his role in a “sweepstakes fraud” scheme that defrauded hundreds of U.S. residents, many of them elderly.

Sniffen was charged by indictment in September 2015 and was extradited from Costa Rica in July 2017.

As part of his guilty plea, Sniffen admitted that from approximately September 2010 through May 2014, he worked for a call center in Costa Rica that placed telephone calls to U.S. victims, falsely informing those victims that they had won a substantial cash prize in a “sweepstakes.” The victims, many of whom were elderly, were told that in order to receive the prize, they had to pay for a purported “refundable insurance fee,” Sniffen admitted. Sniffen knew that certain factual assertions that he and his co-conspirators made in their pitches to victims were false, he admitted.

A federal grand jury sitting in New Orleans, Louisiana, returned an indictment against two Louisiana residents, identified as Imad “Eddie” Hamdan, and Ziad “Z” Mousa who owned and operated over 30 locations of Brothers Food Mart, for allegedly hiring undocumented workers to work in their stores and paying them in cash.

Hamdan and Mousa were charged each with one count of conspiracy to harbor an alien, one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States, 48 counts of failure to withhold and pay over employment tax, and 12 counts of aiding and assisting in the preparation of a fraudulent tax return, according to Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Richard E. Zuckerman.

To further conceal these undocumented workers, Hamdan and Mousa allegedly filed false employment tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that did not report the cash wages paid to the undocumented workers.

The indictment further alleges that Hamdan and Mousa aided in the filing of fraudulent tax returns for the managers of Brothers Food Mart stores.

In addition, the indictment charges that Hamdan and Mousa paid the salaries of the managers of the Brothers Food Mart stores partially in cash.

In the defendant’s residence: cocaine prepackaged for sale and color-coded for size; multiple firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition; large amounts of cash; multiple vehicles registered to Amman and his family;

In the defendant’s garage: amounts of powder cocaine; numerous inositol bottles and material to convert cocaine into crack; large amounts of cash; three pistols (including one registered to Amman); and a safe imbedded into the concrete floor.

At Amman’s residence: firearms; prepackaged amounts of crack and cocaine in a jacket with Amman’s name on it; keys to a truck (in the jacket); in the truck was approximately $1,000 and additional prepackaged cocaine.

On March 1, Judge Marco A Hernandez of the US District Court for the District of Oregon entered an order revoking the naturalized US citizenship of a convicted war criminal Sammy Rasema Yetisen aka Rasema Handanovic aka Zolja, a native of the former Yugoslavia that illegally procured a US citizenship.

The court’s order was based on its finding that Yetisen lacked the good moral character required to naturalize because she had executed six unarmed civilians and prisoners of war during the 1990s Balkans Conflicts because of their religion and ethnicity, later concealing her crimes to procure refugee status and US citizenship in the United States.

The unit targeted Bosnian Croats who resided in the village because of their Christian religion and Croat ethnicity, killing 22 unarmed individuals including women and the elderly.

Yetisen played a key role in the massacre, serving as part of a firing squad that lined up and executed six unarmed prisoners of war and civilians.
