As Hurricane Michael violently moves across Northwest Florida and affects millions of people in Georgia and Alabama, the Trump Administration wants every person in the storm’s path to take shelter, stay safe, and heed all warnings from local and state officials.
Yesterday, President Trump declared a state of emergency for Florida, authorizing the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA to coordinate all disaster relief efforts and provide appropriate assistance for required emergency measures. Specifically, FEMA is allowed at its discretion to identify, mobilize, and provide all equipment and resources necessary to alleviate suffering from the storm.
“Federal resources are on the ground at every level,” President Trump said today. Earlier this afternoon, the President joined Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and FEMA Administrator Brock Long in the Oval Office for a briefing on the storm’s expected impact. When Hurricane Michael made landfall today, it registered as a dominant category four storm, on the verge of important category five strength. t was a category two hurricane by Tuesday, and a borderline category five on Wednesday morning, packing 155mph winds. Florida Governor Rick Scott warned of “unimaginable devastation,” saying it would be the worst storm in 100 years. Michael reportedly killed at least 13 people in Central America: six in Honduras, four in Nicaragua and three in El Salvador. More than 370,000 people in Florida were ordered to evacuate, but officials reckon many ignored the warning.

US financial markets suffered their long-overdue sharpest one-day falls in months, as fears about rising interest rates, inflation, trade tensions intensified.
The tech-rich Nasdaq led the declines, sliding 4%, or 315.9 points, to 7,422.
The Dow Jones and S&P 500 also fell by more than 3%, with losses accelerating towards the end of the day.
Netflix fell 8%, while Amazon slid 6%. The slides extended declines in Europe, where exchanges in Germany and France ended the day down more than 2%. The Dow fell 831.8 points or 3.15% to 25,598.7. The S&P 500 dropped 94.6 or 3.29% to 2,785.6 – the biggest one-day fall since early February.

A Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS) operative, Yanjun Xu, aka Qu Hui, aka Zhang Hui, has been arrested and charged with conspiring and attempting to commit economic espionage and steal trade secrets from multiple U.S. aviation and aerospace companies. Xu was extradited to the United States yesterday.
 “This indictment alleges that Chinese intelligence officials sought to steal trade secrets and other sensitive information from an American company that leads the way in aerospace,” said Assistant Attorney General Demers.
“This case is not an isolated incident. It is part of an overall economic policy of developing China at American expense. We cannot tolerate a nation’s stealing our firepower and the fruits of our brainpower. We will not tolerate a nation that reaps what it does not sow.”
 Yanjun Xu is a Deputy Division Director with the MSS’s Jiangsu State Security Department, Sixth Bureau. The MSS is the intelligence and security agency for China and is responsible for counter-intelligence, foreign intelligence, and political security. MSS has broad powers in China to conduct espionage both domestically and abroad.
Xu was arrested in Belgium on April 1, under a federal complaint, and then indicted by a federal grand jury in the Southern District of Ohio. The government unsealed the charges today, following his extradition to the United States. The four-count indictment charges Xu with conspiring and attempting to commit economic espionage and theft of trade secrets.

Tropical Storm Florence is predicted to accelerate back to hurricane strength quickly, as weathermen and East Coast residents of the US preparing for the first big weather event of the season.

From Massachusetts to Florida, residents on the eastern coastline of the US are tracking the first big named event of the 2018 Atlantic storm season, as Tropical Storm Florence, currently some 800 miles southeast of the island of Bermuda, with winds topping about 70 mph is slowly increasing, moving north-west. Computer models by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) warn that Florence could swell to a Category 4 hurricane carrying winds up to 150 mph by Wednesday.

 “Interests along the US East Coast, particularly from north Florida through North Carolina, should closely monitor the progress of Florence,” the NHC noted, while other experts were willing to be more specific. “We are in a serious situation; we have a major hurricane potentially making landfall on the East Coast next week.”

33 individuals were charged Thursday following an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) into a scheme to illegally bring into the United States millions of dollars of Chinese-manufactured goods by smuggling them through ports of entry on the East and West Coasts. One defendant is also charged with unlawful procurement of naturalization.

The charges include conspiracy to traffic, and trafficking, in counterfeit goods; conspiracy to smuggle, and smuggling, fake products into the United States; money laundering conspiracy; immigration fraud and unlawful procurement of naturalization.

Also, the government restrained nine real properties in Queens, Staten Island, and Brooklyn, New York belonging to the defendants.

“This investigation exposed the global nature of intellectual property crimes, allegedly being executed by those arrested today. Counterfeit goods manufactured and smuggled from China with a suggested value close to half a billion dollars, were intended to make its way into U.S. markets and the hands of unsuspecting consumers,” said HSI Special Agent-in-Charge Melendez.

“This investigation should be a crystal clear message that counterfeiting and intellectual property rights violations are anything but a victimless crime as it harms legitimate businesses, consumers, and governments.”

According to the court filings, the defendants played various roles in the trafficking of counterfeit goods manufactured in China, brought by ocean-going ships to the United States in 40-foot shipping containers, smuggled through ports of entry disguised as legitimate imports and distributed throughout the country. The counterfeit goods included items such as fake Louis Vuitton and Tory Burch handbags, Michael Kors wallets, Hermes belts and Chanel perfume.

Marlon Hicks, 31, of Crown Point, Indiana, was sentenced to 15 years in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release, for distributing information regarding the manufacture and use of explosives, with the intent that the information is used for and in furtherance of a crime of violence.

“The Department of Justice is committed to investigating and prosecuting terrorist threats against our homeland,” said Assistant Attorney General Demers.

“The defendant plotted to conduct an attack on U.S. soil and, with today’s sentence, he is being held accountable for his actions. I applaud the efforts of the agents and prosecutors to achieve this successful outcome. Their work will ensure that the actions of the defendant, inspired by an evil, will serve only as a cautionary tale for other would-be terrorists.”

According to the documents, in this case, Hicks rapidly transformed from a vocal online supporter of the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS), a designated foreign terrorist organization, to someone planning a terrorist act.

President Trump has accused China of manipulating its currency to combat US tariffs, an accusation resembling claims Mr. Trump made during his 2016 campaign as the two countries prepare to meet in Washington to discuss the ongoing trade fight. In July, the two countries imposed the first round of tit-for-tat tariffs, on trade worth $34bn, with plans on the drawing board to impose import duties on a further $16bn .

The administration is also preparing additional tariffs on $200bn worth of Chinese goods, which are the subject of hearings in Washington this week.

“I think China’s manipulating their currency, absolutely,” Mr. Trump told Reuters.

Mr. Trump has criticized the higher cost of borrowing, fearing that will slow the economy.

“I’m not thrilled with [Fed] raising of interest rates, no. I’m not thrilled,” he said, repeating a criticism which he has made before.
