Even if a COVID-19 vaccine is developed, controlling the virus will require a “massive effort”, WHO emergencies director Dr. Mike Ryan predicted, warning the virus wouldn’t disappear, as it has killed 300,000 people worldwide, with more than 4.3m cases infected:
“It is important to put this on the table: this virus may become just another endemic virus in our communities, and this virus may never go away,” Dr. Ryan told the virtual press conference from Geneva.
“HIV has not gone away – but we have come to terms with the virus.”
Dr. Ryan then said he doesn’t believe “anyone can predict when this disease will disappear”.
There are currently more than 100 potential vaccines in development – but Dr. Ryan noted there are other illnesses, such as measles, that still haven’t been eliminated despite there being vaccines for them.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stressed it was still possible to control the virus, with effort.
“The trajectory is in our hands, and it’s everybody’s business, and we should all contribute to stop this pandemic,” he said.
Dr. Ryan added: “There is some magical thinking going on that lockdowns work perfectly and that unlocking lockdowns will go great. Both are fraught with dangers.”

The US Senate passed a bill by a single vote giving government agencies such as the FBI and CIA the right to access citizens browsing history without a warrant, meaning that authorities are not required to have probable cause to believe someone may have committed a crime before requiring their ISP to hand over web browsing and search history records, a new expansion of the United States Patriot Act to surveil online activity and electronic devices.
The Senate is seeking to vote on renewing the Patriot Act, a bill that gives government agencies expansive powers to conduct mass electronic surveillance of citizens. The House of Representatives had already approved the move.
ACLU said that Congress has “overwhelmingly passed changes that will help ensure that government claims before a secret intelligence court do not go unchecked”, and that the House should not consider any legislation that does not include the additions.
“But this won’t address all of the surveillance abuses that have come to light in recent years and Congress has more work to do to protect Americans’ privacy online. The vote today shows that a majority of senators agree that what we do online should not be subject to warrantless surveillance — and it’s past time for Congress to make this clear in our laws”, he said.
