A citizen of the United Kingdom was arrested in Estepona, Spain, by Spanish National Police on a U.S. request based on multiple charges in connection with the July 2020 hack of Twitter that resulted in the compromise of over 130 Twitter accounts, including those belonging to politicians, celebrities and companies. Joseph O’Connor, 22, is charged by criminal complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

The Department of Justice, together with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), announced that KuuHuub Inc., a Canadian corporation, and two Finnish corporations, Kuu Huub Oy and Recolor Oy, agreed to a settlement to resolve alleged violations of the FTC Act and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA) associated with the companies’ “Recolor” mobile app and digital coloring book.

The United States alleged that the Recolor app included a “kids” category targeted at children, and that defendants also obtained actual knowledge that children 13 years old and younger were using and accessing the Recolor app not only to color images but also to use the app as a social media platform for communicating.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has filed seven new charges against Paige Thompson, the former Amazon Web Services (AWS) engineer accused of hacking Capital One and stealing the personal data of more than 100 million Americans, with the new charges, which include six counts of computer fraud and abuse and one count of access device fraud, revealed in court documents filed earlier this month. The previous indictment charged her with one count each of wire fraud and computer crime and abuse, which meant she faced five up to five in prison and a fine of up to $250,000, but now faces up to 20 years of jail time.

Attorney General William P. Barr today directed the Federal Bureau of Prisons to schedule the executions of two federal death-row inmates who were each convicted of murder.

William Emmett LeCroy raped and murdered Joann Lee Tiesler, a 30-year-old nurse, in 2001. LeCroy had previously served 10 years in federal and state prison for, among other crimes, aggravated assault, burglary, child molestation, and statutory rape. 
Christopher Andre Vialva murdered youth ministers Todd and Stacie Bagley in 1999. While stopping to use a payphone in Killeen, Texas, Todd Bagley agreed to give a ride to Vialva and two of his accomplices. In June 2000, a jury in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas found Vialva guilty of, among other offenses, two counts of murder within the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States and unanimously recommended two death sentences. His convictions and sentences were affirmed on appeal, and his requests for collateral relief were rejected by every court that considered them. Vialva’s execution is scheduled for Sept. 24, 2020.
The executions will take place at the U.S. Penitentiary in Terre Haute, Indiana.

A Lebanese national, identified as Ghassan Diab, 37, a citizen of Lebanon, and  wanted in Florida for allegedly conspiring in the laundering of drug proceeds through the use of the black market peso exchange in support of Hezbollah’s global criminal-support network and a Cypriot national who is wanted in the Northern District of Georgia and the District of Arizona for cyber intrusion and extortion, were both extradited yesterday from the Republic of Cyprus to the United States.

“These successful extraditions demonstrate the commitment of the Department of Justice to support local, state and federal law enforcement agencies throughout the United States and our strong working relationship with dedicated foreign partners who assist in apprehending foreign fugitives wherever they may be hiding,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Brian C. Rabbitt of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.

“Thanks to the efforts of our law enforcement partners in Cyprus, Ghassan Diab and Joshua Polloso Epifaniou will now be held accountable in the United States for their alleged crimes.”

China’s ambassador to the UK, Liu Xiaoming, denied reports that China is carrying out a program of forced sterilization of Uighur women in the western Xinjiang region, a charge based  on

Mr. Liu was also confronted with drone footage that appears to show Uighurs being blindfolded and led to trains. He said he “did not know” what the video was showing.
