Officers with ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) arrested an aggravated felon and immigration fugitive, identified as Yoni Cruz-Lopez, 24, a resident of Mt. Prospect, Illinois, and a citizen of Guatemala, at Union Station after he was released from an Illinois Department of Corrections jail despite an ICE detainer on file.
“I want the public to know that this is an example of the type of dangerous person sanctuary policies protect – an aggravated felon,” said Mr.Robert Guadian, field office director for ERO Chicago.
“This targeted enforcement action was made in one of the country’s busiest transit terminals, possibly putting commuters and travelers at risk. This arrest should have been made in the secure confines of a jail.”
Late last month, IDOC cut off all communication with ICE and refuses to turn over convicted felons. ICE believes local law enforcement’s cooperation with ICE is crucial in promoting public safety.
These dangerous policies (sanctuary policies) leave ICE with no choice, but to increase enforcement to effect arrests to include neighborhoods and public places.
