The new coronavirus mutation circulating in Brazil has been detected for the first time in Germany, as the state of Hesse’s minister of social affairs, Kai Klose, reported that a patient in the western German state tested positive for the Brazilian variant, after the infected person flew into Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s busiest hub, from Brazil.

The infected person had no symptoms,  and a PCR test apparently confirmed that the man had the strain first identified in Brazil, but that confirmatory sequencing results were still pending, since The variant is thought to spread more easily, and to perhaps carry a higher risk of reinfections than the typical COVID variant — but there were as yet no indications of it causing worse symptoms in patients.

Germany’s Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases said the variant detected in Brazil is similar to the one from South Africa and that an “increased transmissibility is considered conceivable”, and the institute said it continues to closely monitor the variant in Germany, as country’s total coronavirus pandemic death toll also crossed the 50,000-mark on Friday.

Former US President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial will begin in the week of February 8, according to US Senate majority leader Chuck Schumer:

“The Senate will conduct a trial of the impeachment of Donald Trump. It will be a full trial. It will be a fair trial,” he said.

The top Democratic leader in the Senate announced the schedule after reaching an agreement with Republicans.

According to the timeline, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will send the article of impeachment to the Senate on Monday, triggering the start of the former president’s trial on the charge of “incitement of insurrection” over the deadly riot at the US capitol on January 6.

The initial proceeding will begin Tuesday, and Trump’s legal team will have time to prepare the case before opening arguments begin in February.

Article 10 of the German constitution guarantees the fundamental right to protection of telecommunications privacy, which can only be limited in grave exceptions to protect the country against armed attack and acts of terrorism as well as cyberattacks, cross-border crime such as the narcotics trade, money laundering and people trafficking.

More and more public figures in Germany have been calling for a much stricter lockdown, proposing that more people work from home and temporary factory shutdowns, which had raised fears of impending economic disaster, when the economy is dealt a heavy blow as stores and factories have to close, a discomfort amplified by Federal Statistics Office report announcing that the economy contracted by 5% last year when the coronavirus pandemic took its course.

That’s less than the 5.7% drop logged back in 2009 at the height of the global financial crisis, and in fact much less than the economic prophets predicted in spring in face of the first lockdown in the country.

Policymakers here appear helpless as they struggle to come up with an efficient strategy to fight the pandemic, while missing the opportunity in summer to develop such a strategy, and instead  wrangled over who’s responsible for what continued between the federal government and top representatives from Germany’s 16 states.

Maybe the current restrictions will have to continue until the Easter holidays as we wait for a slot to get vaccinated. But forcing people into working from home and halting production on factory floors are no reasonable measures as it would add economic disaster to a crisis that we can get on top of with the help of an efficient vaccination campaign and yet-to-be-approved medication.

During a TV interview, Dr. Anthony Fauci said it was “not too late” for those yet to travel to help curb the virus by wearing masks and socially distancing during the thanksgiving, the holyday typically heralding the busiest week for travel in the US, after the country recorded 13 million coronavirus cases, and more than 266,000 people have died.

As of Sunday, the number of Covid-19 cases recorded in November has surpassed four million, double the figure recorded in October, and last year, an estimated 26 million people passed through US airports in the week surrounding the holiday:

“There is almost certainly going to be an uptick because of what has happened with the travel,” said Dr. Fauci, recommending thanksgiving travelers quarantine for a period of time “if it’s possible”.

Dr. Deborah Birx, White House coronavirus response coordinator, echoed Dr. Fauci’s concerns, telling CBS News that people who had travelled for the holiday should avoid seeing relatives over the age of 65.

“Now we’re entering this post-Thanksgiving surge with three, four and 10 times as much disease across the country,” she said.

“We are deeply worried”, she concluded.

Since the riots that unfolded at the US Capitol on January 6, law enforcement officials have accelerated security measures ahead of Inauguration Day over concerns that violent protests may unfold, as tensions remain high among supporters of US President Donald Trump, following an internal memo from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) revealing that officials were made aware of armed protests that were being planned at all 50 state capitols across the Land of the Free, including the US Capitol.

Obtained by ABC News, the FBI bulletin indicates agents received information that also detailed an unidentified group was calling for the “storming” of state, local and federal courthouses if Trump were to be removed from office before Inauguration Day, with administrative buildings were also considered targets, according to the agency.

“The FBI received information about an identified armed group intending to travel to Washington, DC on 16 January,” the memo states.

“They have warned that if Congress attempts to remove POTUS via the 25th Amendment, a huge uprising will occur.”

Additionally, the same group is said to be making plans to “storm” government offices across every US state on Inauguration Day.
