A petition to impose a hard lockdown across Europe gained rapid momentum, as the “ZeroCovid” motion, launched in Berlin and Vienna before dawn, had drawn 17,000 signatures by late Thursday as campaigners declared Europe’s one year of patchy efforts since the pandemic’s outbreak as “failed.”

“Thousands of people die every day, even more get infected,” wrote campaigners, who said Europe’s “enormous wealth” held by a “few individuals” should assist people on low incomes via a “covid-solidarity fee on high estates.”

Six nations called the situation “unacceptable” and warned it “decreases the credibility of the vaccination process”, as several EU countries are receiving significantly fewer doses of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine than expected, after the US firm slowed shipments to Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, that urged the EU to apply pressure on Pfizer-BioNTech.

Pfizer said the reduced deliveries are a temporary issue, saying the drug-maker said shipments were being affected by changes to its manufacturing processes designed to boost production:

“Although this will temporarily impact shipments in late January to early February, it will provide a significant increase in doses available for patients in late February and March,” the company said.

LOS ANGELES — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) officers, in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS), arrested one of ICE’s Most Wanted fugitives in a targeted enforcement action in Anaheim, California, a man identified as Emrah Gocekli, aka Vandoff Shawn Thomas, 33, a citizen of Turkey,  who became the subject of a criminal arrest warrant, issued by the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, following his 2018 violation for escaping from federal immigration custody:

“After more than two years of evasion, this convicted felon and fugitive criminal alien has been apprehended thanks to the diligent efforts of our officers and their coordinated efforts with the USMS,” said ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Los Angeles Field Office Director John Cantú.

“Our officers have taken an oath to enforce and uphold the immigration laws enacted by Congress, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to promote public safety and national security with honor and professionalism.”

Earlier this week, the international team of experts of the World Health Organization (WHO) arrived in Wuhan to study the origin of the pandemic, as the US Department of State shared some data about the outbreak in a hope that the WHO will press the Chinese authorities to get more information about the deadly virus:

“The United States government has reason to believe that several researchers inside the WIV [Wuhan Institute of Virology] became sick in autumn 2019, before the first identified case of the outbreak, with symptoms consistent with both COVID-19 and common seasonal illnesses. This raises questions about the credibility of WIV senior researcher Shi Zhengli’s public claim that there was ‘zero infection’ among the WIV’s staff and students of SARS-CoV-2 or SARS-related viruses,” Mr. Pompeo declared.
The secretary of state noted that WIV had been researching the bat coronavirus RaTG13, which 96.2 percent similar to SARS-CoV-2.
