Heavy monsoonal rains since New Year’s Eve have inundated areas of the capital, filling homes and streets and washing away cars, with Jakarta’s east, many houses were submerged up to their roofs,  the water level reaching as high as 6 feet in many parts.

“As of 4:00pm [Wednesday], there are 19,079 displaced residents who have been evacuated at temporary shelters throughout Jakarta,” city governor Anies Baswedan said in a news conference.

“The rain in Jakarta has stopped, now we are waiting for the water to recede.”

A former Information Technology professional identified as Joel Kurzynski, 39, of Seattle, Washington was sentenced to 30 months in prison and three years supervised release for conducting cyberstalking and threat campaigns against multiple Washington residents.

According to admissions made in connection with his plea, Kurzynski engaged in an extensive and rapidly escalating cyberstalking campaign that targeted two individuals known to him. The online campaign involved — among other things — death threats, body shaming, and hate speech. Beginning in March 2017, Kurzynski orchestrated numerous spam phone calls to Victim 1.

The conduct soon escalated to fake dating profiles wherein Kurzynski portrayed Victim 1 as seeking sadomasochistic or underage relationships. These profiles contained photographs of Victim 1 and his contact information, resulting in solicitations and harassing messages directed toward Victim 1 from multiple strangers. Kurzynski then sent several anonymous death threats to Victim 1, including the threat, “faggot. Time to die.” At one point, Kurzynski impersonated a journalist and contacted Victim 1, claiming that an upcoming article would levy sexual misconduct allegations against Victim 1 related to Victim 1’s work with a non-profit youth organization.

At least 51 people have died and many more are missing after heavy rains caused flooding and landslides across much of western Japan, with Motoyama, near Tokyo, getting unheard of 23 inches of rainfall, with heavy rains expected to continue through Sunday and 48,000 police, firefighters and Self-Defence Force personnel mobilized to help with the rescue effort.

Hiroshima Prefecture was hit the hardest with numerous landslides that killed at least 15 people and authorities have warned that the death toll will continue to rise.

The unintended consequences of the US/China tariff war are hitting hard, as China reduced commitments to buy 366,000 metric tons of U.S. soybeans in the season that ends Aug. 31 and further cut plans to buy 66,000 tons in the following year.

Soybeans are on the hit list of American goods now being targeted by Chinese tariffs that went into effect Friday after the U.S. implemented a raft of duties earlier in the day and President Donald Trump threatened more action.
