The US sanctions risks need to be hedged by switching to alternative currencies and moving away from using the dollar, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said:

“We need to reduce sanctions risks by strengthening our technological independence, by switching to payments in national currencies and in world currencies, alternative to the dollar. We need to move away from the use of Western-controlled international payment systems,” Lavrov declared in an interview with Chinese media.

The minister said the US is aiming to limit the technological development of Russia and China, so the two countries need to strengthen their independence:
“They are promoting their ideologized agenda aimed at maintaining their dominance by holding back the development of other countries. This policy runs counter to the objective trend and, as it was customary to say, is ‘on the wrong side of history.’ The historical process will still take its toll,” Lavrov said.

As some 10 million people across every state and territory except Western Australia were now under a weather warning, some 18,000 people have been evacuated from severe floods across New South Wales (NSW) in Australia, with more heavy rainfall predicted, while the state’s entire coast is now under a severe weather warning.

Days of torrential downpours have caused rivers and dams to overflow around Sydney – the state capital – and in south-east Queensland, and the military is being deployed to help with search and rescue, in what has been called a “one-in-50-years event”.

Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology has forecast “increased rainfall, strong winds, damaging surf and abnormally high tides” in New South Wales on Tuesday, as NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said no deaths had been reported by late Monday – describing it as “a miracle given what we have been through”, disclosing that many of the communities “being battered by the floods” had been affected by bushfires and drought the previous summer:

“I don’t know any time in state history where we have had these extreme weather conditions in such quick succession in the middle of a pandemic,” she said.

PM Scott Morrison has offered funds for those forced to evacuate. He told parliament there was “serious risk still ahead”.

After months of fierce fires in Australia, the rain is tapering off, but flooding  remain a concern for the Albert and Logan rivers area, south of Brisbane, after heavy falls and further showers across the south-east overnight, with river levels are expected to peak on Friday, and Gold Coast beaches will remain closed on a steamy Valentine’s Day.

Forecaster Shane Kennedy said temperatures would stay above 30 degrees Celsius in the south of the state over the next few days.

“Conditions are likely to remain unsettled for the next week, so likely to still see some afternoon showers with the chance of a thunderstorm,” he said.

“But not expecting the same heavy totals that we have seen over the past few days.”
