“Trafficking counterfeit merchandise hurts legitimate business and poses a significant public safety risk as the individuals prey on unsuspecting consumers who believe they are getting name-brand products at a reduced price,” said Timothy Tubbs, deputy special agent in charge of HSI Laredo.
“Together with our Laredo Trade Enforcement Coordination Center law enforcement partners, HSI will continue to engage in an unrelenting pursuit of individuals who attempt to profit from the illegal trafficking of counterfeit products”, that is how a joint effort by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on Feb. 9 seized $14.7 million in counterfeit electronics devices, toys and furniture infringing on multiple CBP-registered trademarks at the World Trade Bridge.
The total manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) value, had the items been legitimate, was $14.7 million.

“Today’s guilty plea is a result of our relentless commitment to disrupt and dismantle all aspects of the CJNG organization,” said Special Agent in Charge Bill Bodner of the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Los Angeles Field Division.
“Our efforts will continue to include a focus on those who facilitate these illicit drug networks. Together with the Department of Justice, we will use all the investigative tools available, including OFAC designations, to bring to justice those who engage in illegal activity that is fueling the drug crisis nationwide.”
A dual U.S.-Mexican citizen, identified as Jessica Johanna Oseguera Gonzalez, 34, of Guadalajara, Mexico, pleaded guilty today to willfully engaging in financial dealings with Mexican companies that had been identified as Specially Designated Narcotics Traffickers by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

The German Health Ministry described the move to halt the use of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine as a “precaution” on the basis of advice from the national health regulator, the Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI), with Italy, France and Spain issuing the same decision soon after. According to the Health Ministry, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) will decide “whether and how the new information will affect the authorization of the vaccine” pending an investigation.
“The most important thing for confidence is transparency,” Spahn said during a briefing.

RKI epidemiologist Dirk Brockmann told German broadcaster ARD that the loosening of measures was particularly unhelpful given the exponential growth that has occurred with the British virus variant B117:
“We are exactly on the flank of the third wave. That can no longer be disputed. And, at this point, we have eased the restrictions and that is speeding up the exponential growth,” he told German broadcaster ARD.
“It has been totally been irrational to loosen up here. It’s just fueling this exponential growth.”
German intensive care doctors warned that some measures should be put back in place to avoid another resurgence:
“From the data we currently have and with the spread of the British mutation, we would argue strongly to return immediately into a lockdown to avoid a strong third wave,” Christian Karagiannidis, director of Germany’s intensive care register, told broadcaster RBB.
The RKI on Tuesday reported 5,480 new cases over 24 hours, bringing the total to 2,581,329.
The number of deaths rose by 238, to 73,656.
