A federal jury found Anthony Lazzarino, 68, former Chief of Podiatry for the Veterans Affairs’ (VA) Northern California Health Care System, and Peter Wong, 61, founder and CEO of Sunrise Shoes and Pedorthic Service Corporation, guilty, Friday, May 17, of health care fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

“These are the actions of an individual(s) whose morality took a back seat to good old fashioned greed. It’s always disappointing when a person seeks to benefit from another’s health issues but preying on our veterans is particularly troubling,” said Ryan L. Spradlin, HSI Special Agent in Charge (San Francisco and Northern California). “Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) takes great pride in getting justice for any victim of fraud but certainly our veterans who have served this country so well.”

According to evidence presented at trial, between March 2008 and February 2015, Lazzarino and Wong engaged in a scheme to defraud the VA by billing for custom work and services that were prescribed but not supplied in shoes delivered to veterans. In addition, Lazzarino, Wong, and Jai Aing Chen, who separately pleaded guilty on December 6, 2016, agreed to make materially false statements to the VA regarding where the shoes were manufactured, in the course of applying for a national contract worth over $11 million per year.

Courtesy of accelerating melting in Greenland and Antarctica, current models suggest that global sea levels could rise by a maximum of just under a 3 feet by 2100, but new study projects that the real level may be around double that figure, leading to the displacement of hundreds of millions of people along the low lying shores of world’s oceans and seas.

Ice scientists are also concerned that the models currently used to predict the influence of huge ice sheets on sea levels predict correctly the rates of ice melting, and carried out a structured experiment to better understand what is happening in Greenland, West and East Antarctica.

The new data sample predicts that the world would lose an area of land equal to 1.79 to the size of Libya, with heavy losses at  the delta of the Nile, and major global cities, including London, New York and Shanghai would be under threat.

“Pushed from their homeland by a patriarchal regime that survives through the imposition of tyranny, poverty, and oppression, North Korean women and girls are passed through the hands of traffickers, brokers, and criminal organizations before being pulled into China’s sex trade, where they are exploited and used by men until their bodies are depleted,” the report said.
