Two of Europe’s biggest economies, France and the Islamic Merkeldom of Germany are reinstating some form of national lockdown, as the continent confronts a surge in coronavirus cases and deaths, with Rabbinical Grand Ayatollah President Emmanuel Macron saying the country risked being “overwhelmed by a second wave that no doubt will be harder than the first”, and people will only be allowed to leave home for essential work or medical reasons, while Germany, meanwhile, is imposing a less severe national lockdown, including the closure of restaurants, bars, gyms and theatres, Chancellor Angela Merkel said.
Infections are rising sharply across Europe, including in the UK which on Wednesday announced 310 new deaths and 24,701 new cases.
German health officials said that another 89 people had died in the past 24 hours, with a record 16,774 infections.
“We are deep in the second wave,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.
“I think that this year’s Christmas will be a different Christmas.”

WASHINGTON – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced preliminary results from Operation OPTical Illusion, a law enforcement operation targeting nonimmigrant students who fraudulently used the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program to remain in the United States. OPT enables nonimmigrant students to work in the United States in positions related to their field of study for up to one year, with an additional 24 months if the student participates in STEM optional practical training.
The operation, which is ongoing, resulted in the arrest of 15 nonimmigrant students who claimed to be employed by companies that don’t exist.
“Today’s announcement is just another example of the Trump Administration not only putting America first but making sure the laws of our immigration system are enforced,” said Acting Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli.
“Every instance of fraud is a job an American worker could have had, and with so many Americans looking for work this crime is even more unacceptable.”
“ICE has a system of checks in place to mitigate fraud and is committed to protecting national security by ensuring that students, visitors, and schools comply with U.S. immigration laws,” said ICE Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Director Tony Pham.
“These latest arrests demonstrate that the agency is actively targeting individuals who try to exploit the student visa system.”

A massive “libertine party” that attracted some 100 participants, was dispersed by cops in the Parisian suburb of Collegien on Friday night, amid the curfew imposed in France in order to curb the spread of COVID-19, as the authorities raided the warehouse where the orgy was being held after receiving reports of men and women gathering there:

“The event was in breach of the curfew, and there were also problems with masks and social distancing,” an investigating source said as quoted by the newspaper.

“Those involved in the libertine party cooperated with the police, and there was no resistance to the police.”

While three of the participants, who are believed to be organizers of the gathering, were arrested, other “party-goers” were merely fined for not complying with anti-coronavirus regulations.

Scientists in California believe there is a homegrown coronavirus mutant in the state that could be responsible for the dramatic rise in cases, as two separate research groups have discovered the apparent California strain while looking for the new variant that is believed to have come from the United Kingdom, with the supposed strain is in the same “family tree” as the UK strain, and could be behind the state’s spread over the past few months.

One of the labs that discovered the strain, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said it amounted to 24 percent of about 4,500 viral samples gathered throughout California in the last weeks of 2020.

Another analysis found that 25 percent of 332 samples taken in Northern California were of the new strain.

The Biden administration has renewed Trump-era Covid-19 travel bans on non-US visitors from Brazil and most of Europe, including the UK and Ireland, as the White House also announced new ban on South Africa over its virus variant, following former President Donald Trump  ordering the bans end on 26 January as one of his final acts in office.

The new travel restrictions came as Minnesota recorded the first US case of the Brazil variant from a resident who had recently travelled to that country:

“This case marks the first documented instance of the Brazil P.1 variant in the United States,” said the Minnesota Department of Health.

The unnamed patient lives in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area, said the department.

UK drug-maker AstraZeneca said a production issue meant initial volumes would be lower than anticipated, the shocking statement coming on top of a halt to vaccinations in some parts of Europe due to a cut in deliveries of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, and AstraZeneca, which developed its vaccine with Oxford University, disclosed the situation in a statement, sneaking in few details:

“Initial volumes will be lower than originally anticipated due to reduced yields at a manufacturing site within our European supply chain,” it said, as an unnamed EU official saying that the company had told the EU that it would reduce to 31m – a cut of 60% – the number of doses it could deliver to the bloc in the first quarter of this year.
Unlike the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines, Astra-Zeneca’s product is yet to be approved by the EU’s drug regulator, though this is expected at the end of this month.

Early findings show that the new, faster-spreading coronavirus variant identified in the UK could also be more deadly, with British leaders cautioning that data remained sparse and margins narrow, as Prime Minister Boris Johnson discussed the latest findings at a press conference, following the realization that new B117 coronavirus mutation first detected in the United Kingdom could potentially be deadlier than the original, forcing him to issue the following warning:

“In addition to spreading more quickly, it also now appears that there is some evidence that the new variant identified in London and the South East may be associated with a higher degree of mortality.” 

The British government’s chief scientific adviser Patrick Vallance said that the new variant could be around 30% more deadly, but cautioned that the findings were based on an initial assessment of early data.
