A Utah man was found guilty of organizing and directing a nationwide drug trafficking organization that imported opioids from China, then using it to manufacture fake prescription medications sold throughout the US.
Aaron Michael Shamo, 29, of Cottonwood Heights, Utah, was found guilty of orchestrating the import and distribution of fentanyl from China, and now faces a potential mandatory-minimum life sentence for his actions.
Federal law enforcement agents and prosecutors agree that an undercover purchase of 100 oxycodone pills is a substantial step in an investigation; Shamo was found guilty of selling half a million pills – or more.
“A major narcotics and money laundering operation was dismantled due to the technological expertise of our agents and law enforcement partners,” said Steven Cagen, special agent in charge of HSI Denver.
Tanner Penwell, 22, pleaded guilty to using unlawful force on an inmate while Penwell was serving as a correctional officer with the Tennessee Department of Corrections.
“This type of behavior and violation of an inmate’s civil rights will not be tolerated,” said Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division.
“The Department of Justice will continue to seek out justice on behalf of those who have had their civil rights violated,” the Department concluded.

A convicted “con man,” identified as James Keegan, 57, of Cicero, Illinois, who fraudulently offered immigration advocacy services, including guaranteed US permanent resident status, in exchange for a fluctuating fee that averaged $3,000 per illegal aliens applicant, was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison.
A law enforcement search of Keegan’s computers and cellphone revealed that he sought to purchase 35 blank residency cards from an online provider of novelty identification documents.
At the time of his immigration fraud scheme, Keegan was on court supervision after recently being released from federal prison for a prior conviction involving investment fraud.

A former Washington, DC Metro Transit Police Officer, Andra Vance, 45, was indicted on charges that he used unreasonable force on an individual, after an incident in 2018, when while on duty as a Metro Transit Police Officer, he assaulted the individual by striking the him with a baton multiple times on the head, and then using the baton to choke the individual.
Based on the review, the department immediately suspended Vance’s police powers, launched an internal investigation, and notified federal authorities, and now he faces a maximum statutory penalty of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 for each of the two civil rights violations.

The executions have been scheduled for December 2019 and January 2020.

Pursuant to an investigation by U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) New York, Hema Patel, 51, a Texas-based bail bondswoman, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for her role in smuggling hundreds of illegal aliens into the United States. Patel was also ordered to forfeit her Texas residence, two hotels, $7.2 million in bail bonds, $400,000 in cash and 11 gold bars, among other assets. On June 7, 2018, Patel pleaded guilty to alien smuggling for financial gain by fraudulently bonding illegal aliens from immigration custody and causing their release into the United States.
“In a classic example of how criminal networks exploit loopholes in our nation’s immigration system to make a profit while threatening the national security of the United States, Hema Patel and her human smuggling co-conspirators manufactured fraudulent bond documents to secure the release of undocumented aliens that were smuggled through the southwest border by an international criminal network,” stated HSI Special Agent-in-Charge Melendez. “HSI remains steadfast in its commitment to secure our nation’s legitimate travel, trade and finance by going after transnational criminal networks, their facilitators and their ill-gained assets.”

Former Tallassee Police investigator Brandan Smirnoff, 27, was sentenced to 22 months in prison for assaulting a handcuffed, 24-year-old man. Smirnoff encountered the victim, J.M., after a vehicle pursuit. After officers pursued J.M. for several minutes on a four-wheeler, J.M. stepped off the four-wheeler, laid face down on the ground, and allowed several Tallassee police officers to handcuff him. While J.M. was handcuffed and compliant, Smirnoff lifted him into the air and slammed him to the ground. Smirnoff then lifted the victim into the air and slammed him to the ground a second time. Moments later, before Smirnoff placed the victim into a patrol car, Smirnoff slammed the victim’s head into the side of the vehicle. Throughout the assault, the victim was handcuffed, compliant, and did not pose a threat.
“This defendant abused his power as a police investigator by assaulting a restrained person in his custody. Officers who willfully use excessive force not only violate the Constitution, they erode the public trust in law enforcement,” said Assistant Attorney General Eric Dreiband of the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division. “The Civil Rights Division is committed to protecting victims of these abuses and upholding the Constitution and laws that protect us all.”
“Mr. Smirnoff not only violated the victim’s constitutional rights by assaulting him repeatedly, he committed a crime that dishonored the whole law enforcement community,” said U.S. Attorney Louis V. Franklin, Sr. “A significant sentence of imprisonment was therefore appropriate in this case, not only to punish Mr. Smirnoff for his actions, but also to deter others from committing acts that lead to distrust between law enforcement and the public.”
President Trump said a US warship destroyed an Iranian drone in the Strait of Hormuz, after the aircraft threatened the ship by flying within 2700 feet of it, with the incident taking place about 10:00am local time when USS Boxer, an amphibious assault ship, took “defensive action” when the drone ignored “multiple calls to stand down and was threatening the safety of the ship and the ship’s crew.”
Trump has called on other countries to condemn Iran and protect their own ships, after Iran declared it had seized a Norwegian oil tanker in the Persian Gulf.
