The Russian defense minister ordered troops taking part in military drills near the Ukrainian border to return to their regular positions, ending weeks of tension caused by a buildup of troops and weaponry at the Ukraine border:

“I believe that the goals of the snap check have been fully achieved. The troops have demonstrated their ability to provide a reliable defense of the country. In this regard, I have decided to complete the inspections in the Southern and Western military districts,” Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said in Crimea, the peninsula Moscow annexed from Ukraine in 2014.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the pullback, saying the move “reduces tensions.”

“Ukraine is always vigilant, yet welcomes any steps to decrease the military presence and de-escalate the situation in Donbas. Ukraine seeks peace,” Zelenskyy wrote on Twitter, adding that he was “grateful to international partners for their support.”

A Massachusetts woman, identified as Deana Martin, 53, of Milton, pleaded guilty today to tax evasion, conspiracy to distribute marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and money laundering. According to court documents and the criminal complaint, she owned and managed Northern Herb, an illegal marijuana delivery service that operated in Massachusetts from 2015 to 2018, and  while Northern Herb purported to sell medical marijuana, it did not require a customer to provide proof of a medical marijuana card. Prosecutors alleged that Northern Herb would deliver marijuana to unattended locations (such as a front door or hallway) where unknown third parties might have access to it. Northern Herb used locations in Canton, Milton, Foxborough, and Hyde Park to store and distribute marijuana, and employed at least 25 workers.

Also, an information, unsealed today, charges Gregory Orr, 64, of Boca Raton, with one count of conspiracy to pay and receive kickbacks and one substantive count of receipt of kickbacks for his alleged role in this scheme.

OMAHA, Neb. – A Mexican citizen was sentenced to eight months in prison for two counts of making a false claim of citizenship and two counts of making a false representation of a social security number. This case came to the attention of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) after a victim (Victim 1) contacted their tip line to report that she was the victim of identity theft. Victim 1 became aware that her identity had been stolen while filing her taxes and after being contacted by her college informing her that she was in jeopardy of losing her financial aid due to the income being earned in her name in Nebraska.

In October 2017, Griselda Genchi-Garcia, 27, a citizen of Mexico, applied for asylum to the United States from Mexico via the San Ysidro Port of Entry, California. She was given a notice to appear and informed she was a noncitizen and not a citizen or national of the United States. Genchi-Garcia was not in possession of a valid unexpired immigrant visa, reentry permit, border crossing card, or other valid entry document. Immigration proceedings were initiated, and Genchi-Garcia was released on parole due to humanitarian concerns, pending interview with an asylum officer.

DENVER — A Colorado man was sentenced to 10.5 years in federal prison following his prior guilty plea to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute controlled substances.

Eber Uriel Perez-Ramirez, 29, of Aurora, Colorado was remanded immediately after sentencing.

“HSI working with the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) helped disrupt a transnational drug trafficking organization with direct ties to a Mexican cartel that sought to bring illegal drugs into Colorado,” said Steven Cagen, Special Agent in Charge of HSI Denver.

“Strong partnerships among federal, state and local law enforcement agencies are critical to identifying and dismantling criminal enterprises that profit from illicit drugs. We’re grateful to the United States Attorney’s Office for ensuring Perez-Ramirez faced justice.”

Rothblatt argued in the government’s sentencing memorandum. “Like defendant, many of these brokers are also engaged in a legitimate business and use that business as a cover to further money laundering activity. It does not matter that defendant never personally distributed narcotics – drug distribution and money laundering are two-sides of the same malignant coin.”

A Colorado man, identified as Alvaro Castillo, 64, of Englewood, was sentenced today to 60 years in prison for production, transportation, and possession of child pornography, after of being  convicted by a federal jury of three counts of production of child pornography; one count of attempted production of child pornography; one count of transportation of child pornography; and one count of possession of child pornography on Nov. 18, 2020.

“Alvaro Castillo recorded himself committing unspeakable crimes against a defenseless child in a foreign country,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Nicholas L. McQuaid of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.

“The department is committed to identifying and prosecuting transnational offenders like Alvaro Castillo, and today’s sentence will protect children in Guatemala and the United States from such predatory behavior.”

EL PASO — A noncitizen, identified as Felix-Eduardo Gomez-Hernandez, 32, actually a Mexican citizen, convicted of an aggravated drug felony, was removed to Mexico on Thursday by officers with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) at the Stanton Street Bridge in downtown El Paso. Gomez-Hernandez was considered a threat to public safety and an ICE enforcement priority due to an aggravated felony conviction for manufacturing and delivering methamphetamine.

On Feb. 10, 2008, Gomez-Hernandez was legally admitted into the United States at the Ysleta Port of Entry in El Paso as a non-immigrant visitor. However, he failed to comply with the conditions of the non-immigrant status under which he entered the United States.

Ransomware is used to scramble computer networks and steal information, as attackers target companies or organizations and can lock their systems, then demand large sums of money in return for ending the hack, hence the Washington DC’s police department said in a statement that it was “aware of unauthorized access on our server”:

“While we determine the full impact and continue to review activity, we have engaged the FBI to fully investigate this matter,” the statement added, without providing further details of the reported breach.
