The Department of Justice announced that it has taken its first action in federal court to combat fraud related to the coronavirus (COVI-19) pandemic,court papers filed in Austin against operators of a fraudulent website, following Attorney General William Barr’s recent direction for the department to prioritize the detection, investigation, and prosecution of illegal conduct related to the pandemic.The civil complaint and accompanying court papers filed on Saturday, March 21, 2020, the operators of the website “corona-virus-medicalkit.com” are engaging in a wire fraud scheme seeking to profit from the confusion and widespread fear surrounding COVID-19. Information published on the website claimed to offer consumers access to World Health Organization (WHO) vaccine kits in exchange for a shipping charge of 9.95, which consumers would pay by entering their credit card information on the website. In fact, there are currently no legitimate COVI-19 vaccines and the WHO is not distributing any such vaccine. In response to the department’s request, U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman issued a temporary restraining order requiring that the registrar of the fraudulent website immediately take action to block public access to it.

The bad news is that China fears second wave of COVID-19 infections as expats return, as the Islamic Merkeldom of Germany plans to take on debt for the first time since 2013 to mount a trillion-dollar stimulus package, and Spain records its highest daily corona-virus death toll.
In addition, virus death rate in Indonesia is the highest in the world, with experts saying it’s because reported case numbers are too low, now having a 9.3 % death rate from corona-virus, after the death toll rose by a quarter at the weekend, to 48 out of a total of 514 confirmed cases. The health ministry in Jakarta last week forecast a possible 700,000 cases.
Meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 cases in the United States topped 40,000, according to report from Johns Hopkins University, reaching 40,961 with 485 deaths, with the state of New York now being the epicenter of the COVID-19 outbreak in the country, with 20,875 cases reported, New Jersey and Washington have reported 2,844 and 1,996 cases, respectively, according to the center.

According to International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Dr. Kristalina Georgieva,  the newly signed China-U.S. phase-one trade deal will reduce the uncertainty that has impeded global economic growth, but the cumulative effect of the U.S.-China trade conflict, provided no actions taken, could mean a loss of 0.8 percent of global GDP, or around 700 billion U.S. dollars by 2020.

“It is a welcoming sign that we now have the phase-one deal, sign in terms of reducing some of the uncertainty,” she said at an event hosted by Peterson Institute for International Economics, a think-tank based in Washington D.C.

Dr. Georgieva warned that trade tensions were “taking a toll” on global growth, at a time when the global economy was going through a “synchronized slowdown.”

“What we are seeing now is that we’ve some reduction of this uncertainty, but it’s not eliminated,” Georgieva said.

“We would see shrinkage of this negative impact, but not the eradication of this impact.”

Vicious storms and torrential rain have wreaked havoc in the fire-devastated states of New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, and despite the wet weather, hundreds of blazes continue to burn and many areas remain dry, as several major highways were cut off, while theme parks closed in southeastern Queensland after some of the heaviest rain in months fell in the state. Local media showed video footage of dozens of vehicles being swept away in flash flooding.

Standing water reached 13 inches in some areas and Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology tweeted that over 100 millimeters of rain was expected to fall across the night and early Saturday morning in many other locations.

The Bureau of Meteorology for Queensland also told drivers to “take care on the roads — if it’s flooded, forget it.”

New South Wales, where 4.9 million hectares have been destroyed by fire, saw power cuts due to the heavy rainfall.

Firefighters in the southeastern state were hopeful the weather change would bring much-needed respite for areas where dozens of bush fires still raged.(abc.net.au)
