NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The mastermind behind an extensive drug trafficking ring entered a guilty plea this week, and four other defendants either entered pleas or were sentenced recently to substantial terms in prison for distributing large amounts of fentanyl, heroin and cocaine in Newport News, Virginia, and North Carolina:
“Fentanyl and heroin have inflicted immeasurable amounts of pain and brought devastation to families across the United States and in EDVA,” said Raj Parekh, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.
“Due to their tenacity and commitment, our federal, state, and local law enforcement partners seized 24 illegal firearms, 30 kilograms of heroin and enough fentanyl to kill over 14 million people, saving our communities from significant loss of life and destruction.”
According to court documents, Ramiro Ramirez-Barreto, 44, from the Mexican State of Morelos, operated a continuing criminal enterprise with ties to Virginia, North Carolina, Texas and California. Ramirez-Barreto was linked to the Sinaloa Cartel in Mexico, as were his drug sources. His operation supplied cocaine, heroin and fentanyl to numerous drug trafficking organizations in Newport News, Virginia, and in Henderson and Greensboro, North Carolina.

Steve Chen, 63, a.k.a. “Li Chen” and “Boss,” of Bradbury, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge John F. Walter, who found that Chen’s “litany of lies” promoted a scam of “epic proportions.” Chen pleaded guilty in June 2020 to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and one count of tax evasion.
Chen was the owner and chief executive officer of U.S. Fine Investment Arts, Inc. (USFIA), and six other companies that used the same Arcadia address. From July 2013 until September 2015, Chen fraudulently promoted and solicited USFIA investments, and he ultimately obtained approximately $147 million from 72,000 victims, in one of the largest pyramid schemes ever prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California.

Davis announced today. Chief U.S. District Judge David C. Nye also ordered Johnson serve lifetime supervised release following his prison sentence. After a three-day trial held in October 2019, a jury found Johnson guilty of possession child pornography and sexually exploiting an 8-year-old girl while required to register as a sex offender under federal and state law.

“These heinous crimes against children must come to an end,” said acting SAC Roberts. “The sentencing in this case represents how committed HSI and our partners are about removing dangerous predators from our streets. I could not be more proud of all of those involved in this case,” Roberts continued.

“The 60-year sentence imposed by Chief Judge Nye will ensure the community’s most vulnerable members, young children, are protected from future predatory behavior by Johnson,” U.S. Attorney Davis said.

“The continued dedication and determination of federal agents to identify the victim in this case was nonpareil.”

This case was investigated by HSI and U.S. Marshals Service (USMS).

Under the direction of  Dr. Andre Kalil, the first clinical trial in the United States of a possible corona-virus treatment is underway in Nebraska, as a large sample of 400 patients at 50 locations around the world will be studied, with the half of the patients in the international study will receive the antiviral medicine Remdesivir, while the other half will receive a placebo.

It usually takes a year or so to develop and analyze the statistical data of whether the patients provided with the placebo, or the real medicine without knowing the substance of the pill they are taking, will show significant difference in treatment results, hence accepting, or rejecting the null hypothesis that the study has merits or not.
Dr. Andre Kalil said the goal was to help people who need it the most, starting with fourteen people evacuated from a cruise ship in Japan are being treated in Nebraska, with half of the patients in the international study will receive the antiviral medicine Remdesivir, while the other half will receive a placebo.

There are no proven treatments or vaccines for the new virus, which has infected more than 80,000 people worldwide and killed more than 2,700, with the overwhelming majority of cases in China.

A Macedonian climber and a Japanese alpinist are among the dead on Mt. Everest in this year’s spring climbing, which ends later this month, officials said on Monday.

Macedonian climber, Gjeorgi Petkov, 62, died over the weekend near camp 3 at 7,200 meters above sea level, said Gyanendra Shrestha, a Tourism Ministry official at Everest base camp.

Details were few, but local media reported that he died of heart problems.

Thirty-six-year-old Japanese alpinist Nobukazu Kuriki, who lost nine fingers to frostbite in a previous attempt on Everest, was found dead at a higher camp on the 8,848-meter peak, said Shrestha.

Kuriki was a “true alpinist” who was accompanied by a large film crew shooting his Himalayan adventure, according to Alan Arnett, a U.S. blogger on mountaineering.

Nepal is home to eight of the world’s highest peaks. Hundreds of climbers flock to the country during spring climbing season, which runs between April and May. The two months offer several windows for climbers to scale the snow-capped peaks.
