India’s health ministry said it has identified a new double mutant variant of the COVID19 across half the country’s states as well as many other strains or variants of concern, but the ministry said its researchers are not sure if it is the reason for the rapid spread of the infection around the country.

The Indian benchmark indices fell more than one percent amid fear of a massive jump in coronavirus cases and identification of new mutant variants in the country’s 18 states. Metals, auto, and financial stocks also witnessed a major sell-off by investors.

With COVID19 cases numbers roaring upwards, Health Minister Jens Spahn has said Germany’s health system could be pushed to its limits in April, warning that cases could reach 100,000 per day, as latest press conference comes as the country struggles to battle a third wave of infections. State health officials warned that the current increase in coronavirus cases is likely going to be “harder to curb” than the previous two, in large part because of the more virulent and more easily transmitted B117 variant.

There are “clear signs” that the third wave that Germany currently is in “could be even worse than the first two waves,” said RKI president Wieler, as at a joint press conference with Health Minister Spahn, Wieler appealed for people to reduce their social contacts over the Easter holidays.

BEIJING, March 26 (Xinhua) — The China National Space Administration (CNSA) released two new images of Mars captured by the country’s Tianwen-1 probe, and in the images, Mars is crescent-shaped with a clear surface texture. When the Tianwen-1 probe was 11,000 km away from Mars on the far side of the planet to the sun, it took panoramic photos of Mars with a medium-resolution camera onboard, with  Tianwen-1 probe operating in the parking orbit around Mars for a month. The high-resolution camera, medium-resolution camera, mineral spectrometer and other payloads onboard were switched on successively to carry out exploration of Mars and obtain scientific data, according to the CNSA.

A group of US B-1 bomber aircraft have accomplished the first ever landing in the Arctic Circle as well as in Poland as part of the most recent Bomber Task Force mission, the US Air Force disclosed last week:

“The B-1s accomplished a number of historic firsts during this deployment. They were the first bombers to deploy to Norway, land in the Arctic Circle and land in Poland where they conducted the first hot-pit refuel of a B-1 in Europe, demonstrating a critical agile combat employment capability”, the release said.

The Air Force explained the group of B-1 bombers conducted nine sorties while integrating with other NATO allies’ aircraft from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Poland, Germany and Italy, while yet another US bomber, a B-2 Spirit, accomplished its final mission as part of Bomber Task Force on 25 March.

Around the world over 124 million cases of coronavirus have been confirmed across, while the global death toll from the pandemic has now reached 2.73 million, with the US tops the list of the most affected nations with over 29.9 million infected and 543,000 deaths, followed by Brazil with around 12.1 million cases and a death toll of over 298,000.

At the same time, India has the third-highest number of infections (11.6 million cases, around 160,000 fatalities), while Mexico has the third-highest death toll in the world (over 199,000 deaths, with 2.2 million cases having been detected in the country.

US President Joe Biden was pressed on how he would address the surge in migrants at the southern border at his first official press conference, being  challenged on whether his policies could be contributing to the increase in child arrivals, as more than 17,000 juveniles are being kept in government detention centers, but he had defended his record and vowed to be transparent. He also doubled his administration’s vaccine rollout goal, saying that he now aims to have 200 million jabs be given before his 100th day in office, but the situation at the US-Mexico border dominated the event.

During the White House news conference, Mr. Biden blamed his predecessor Donald Trump for the growing humanitarian crisis on the southern border, and said it was normal for the US to experience an influx of migrants in cooler months:

“The truth of the matter is, nothing has changed,” he said.

“The reason they’re coming is that it’s the time they can travel with the least likelihood of dying on the way because of the heat in the desert.”

“I’d like to think it’s because I’m a nice guy, but it’s not,” he said, calling the surge a cyclical event.

German Health Minister Jens Spahn has indicated that rising infections mean it may be impossible to ease restrictions in the coming weeks, hence experts now warn that the rise in cases is “clearly exponential”, and the country may not be able to relax lockdown measures in the run-up to Easter.

Mr. Spahn made his comments as Germany’s Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases warned that case numbers were rising at a “very clearly exponential rate”:

“The rising case numbers may mean that we are unable to take any further steps towards opening up in the weeks to come. On the contrary, we may even have to take steps backwards.” 

Health authorities say highly contagious variants have driven up case numbers in the EU’s biggest country, which is entering a third wave of the disease.

“We can no longer be punished for our geographical position,” Malta’s Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri said, as EU foreign affairs secretary’s from Cyprus, Greece, Italy,  and Spain met in Athens to call for changes to the EU’s pact on migration and asylum, pushing for an EU-wide repatriation mechanism, saying a proposed overhaul of migration rules does not go far enough.

Greece, Cyprus, Italy, Malta and Spain took part in the talks ahead of an EU summit later this week which is expected to focus on EU-Turkey relations. The five EU members have extensive Mediterranean coastlines and are the most common targets for migrants from North Africa and the Middle East, and Turkey, which hosts more than 3.5 million Syrian refugees, agreed to take back migrants not entitled to EU protection in return for billions of euros in aid.

But migrant groups say the pact signed with Brussels in 2016 has serious flaws. The EU is planning to reform the deal.

Lava at Fagradalsfjall burst through a crack in the Earth’s crust hundreds of meters long and a series of small fountains turned the night sky red, and despite that Icelanders had been bracing themselves for an eruption for several weeks, after the island nation recorded more than 50,000 recent earthquakes, so far the eruption has not spewed out much ash, and no major disruption is expected.

Meteorologists said the event was small and no-one was in danger, with the last recorded  eruption there was some 800 years ago.
