Cmdr. Francisco X. Garza, a native of Phoenix, Arizona, is the ship’s commanding officer and leads a crew of 70 officers and enlisted personnel. The 3,200-ton Oakland was built by Austal USA/General Dynamics in Mobile, Alabama. The ship is 421 feet in length, has a beam of 103 feet, and a navigational draft of 15 feet. The ship is powered by two gas turbine engines, two main propulsion diesel engines, and four waterjets to reach speeds up to 40-plus knots.

NEW YORK – A federal judge in New York sentenced a Dominican national, identified as Christopher Santos-Felix, 29, from the Bronx, to 45 months incarceration and three years of supervised release following his conviction for assault on a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportation officer.
On the morning of March 3, 2019, deportation officers from the ICE Enforcement Removal Operations (ERO) New York Field Office attempted to arrest the individual, and Court documents show that Santos-Felix was initially cooperative as the deportation officers attempted to take him into custody. Short time later, after the officers removed his handcuffs to allow him to put on an article of clothing, Santos-Felix pushed an officer before running into a bedroom. The fugitive operations team members followed him into the bedroom where he became assaultive and combative. During the commotion, Santos-Felix bit off the tip of the ring finger of one of the officers attempting to restrain him.
The deportation officer was treated at a local hospital for his injuries, and returned to full duty, several weeks later.

The number of people who have died worldwide in the Covid-19 pandemic has surpassed three million, the critical milestone coming the day after the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) warned the world was “approaching the highest rate of infection” so far, as India – experiencing a second wave – recorded more than 230,000 new cases on Saturday alone.
Almost 140 million cases have been recorded since the pandemic began.
