The Federal Reserve Vice President Richard Clarida predicts that US unemployment rate is likely to be highest in 80 years due to the measures undertaken to fight the (COVID-19) pandemic, and the labor market’s recovery will take longer than the economy’s:

“We’re living through the most severe contraction in activity and surge in unemployment that we’ve seen in our lifetimes. Unfortunately the unemployment rate is going to surge to numbers that we’ve not probably seen since the 1940s”, he said, as at least 30 million Americans filed for first-time unemployment benefits in the six weeks up to 1 May”, according to the Labor Department.

Mr. Clarida said the unemployment numbers that will be available soon are going to be very elevated, and the course of the economy will depend on the course of the virus’ range of scenarios:

“There can be a rebound in the economy once businesses reopen and people return to work. But I think realistically, it’s going to take some time for the labor market to fully recover from the shock. That’s very uncertain at this point. I do think (economic) recovery can commence in the second half of the year”, Mr. Clarida concluded.

According to a survey by global technology company Morning Consult, twenty-six percent of Democratic voters said the party should select a different candidate for the 2020 general election, after Joe Biden denied allegations that he sexually assaulted former employee Tara Reade.

Of the 1911 self-proclaimed registered voters who took the poll, 61 percent said they support Biden following the allegations.

The results showed that the party’s younger voters are less likely to back Biden following his denial. Forty percent of Democrats under the age of 45 said the party should pick a different nominee, compared to 15 percent of those ages 45 and older.

Researchers in the US and UK have identified hundreds of mutations to the virus which causes the disease Covid-19, as preliminary research from the US has suggested one particular mutation – D614G – is becoming dominant and could make the disease more infectious, with researchers from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, who have been tracking changes to the “spike” of the virus that gives it its distinctive shape, using a database called the Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID), observed that this particular mutation grow more quickly – but the consequences of this are not yet clear.

The research team analyzed UK data from corona-virus patients in Sheffield. Although they found people with that particular mutation of the virus seemed to have a larger amount of the virus in their samples, they didn’t find evidence that those people became sicker or stayed in hospital for longer. Another study from University College London (UCL) identified 198 recurring mutations to the virus.

One of its authors, Professor Francois Balloux, said: “Mutations in themselves are not a bad thing and there is nothing to suggest SARS-CoV-2 is mutating faster or slower than expected.

“So far, we cannot say whether SARS-CoV-2 is becoming more or less lethal and contagious.”
