A Bangladeshi national formerly residing in Monterrey, Mexico, was sentenced to 46 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release for his role in a scheme to smuggle aliens from Mexico into the United States, after Moktar Hossain admitted that from March 2017 to August 2018, he conspired to bring, and did bring, Bangladeshi nationals to the United States at the Texas border in exchange for payment. Hossain operated out of Monterrey, Mexico, where he maintained a hotel that housed aliens on their way to the United States. Hossain paid drivers to transport the aliens to the U.S. border, and gave the aliens instructions on how to cross the Rio Grande river. 

“The defendant was a key player in an organized smuggling network that operated for profit and preyed on Bangladeshi nationals who wanted to enter the United States illegally,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General David P. Burns of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division.

“This sentence serves as a clear deterrent to participants of such transnational criminal organizations who seek to undermine the security of our borders by illegally facilitating the travel of foreigners into the United States for a financial gain.”

“Border security and national security are one in the same,” said U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Patrick for the Southern District of Texas.

“We must know who is coming into the country, and we cannot allow unfiltered access. My office continues to work with all our partners executing this mission.”

His statement came amid reports that an officer injured in the protests had died, and four people have already been confirmed dead in Wednesday’s mayhem, including a woman shot by a police officer.

Returning to Twitter after a 12-hour freeze of his account as the social media company said his tweets could risk more violence, Mr. Trump said: “Now Congress has certified the results a new administration will be inaugurated on January 20th.

“My focus now turns to ensuring a smooth, orderly and seamless transition of power. This moment calls for healing and reconciliation.“

Mass infections are putting pressure on hospitals across Europe during winter, as the World Health Organization (WHO) has called on European countries to do more to curb a new variant of coronavirus that was first detected in the UK, and director Hans Kluge said tougher measures were needed to “flatten the steep vertical line” of rising cases in some countries saying 22 European countries now have cases of the variant, calling this “an alarming situation”.

First detected in November, the variant has driven a spike in cases in the UK, its spread has concerned many European countries that have already imposed full national lockdowns to tackle a marked rise in infections during winter, and health experts say the variant is considerably more transmissible than previous strains but not necessarily any more dangerous for those infected.

They have also played down the possibility that vaccines will not be as effective against the variant.

South Africa medical scientists in say there is a “reasonable concern” that the new variant of Covid-19 sweeping across the country might prove to be more resistant to current vaccines being rolled out in the UK and elsewhere:

“It’s a theoretical concern. A reasonable concern… that the South African variant might be more resistant,” Prof Shabir Madhi, who has led trials for the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine in South Africa, told the BBC.

Prof Madhi was responding to comments by the UK government and scientists, saying that a definitive answer would probably come in a matter of weeks, with extensive testing already under way in South Africa, and a real concern that the virus here has mutated far more than the variant in the UK, and one of those mutations might mean it can evade attack by antibodies that would normally fight coronavirus.
