China has announced that it will allow couples to have up to three children, after census data showed a steep decline in birth rates, scrapping its decades-old one-child policy in 2016, replacing it with a two-child limit which has failed to lead to a sustained upsurge in births.

The cost of raising children in cities has deterred many Chinese couples, as he latest move was approved by President Xi Jinping at a meeting of top Communist Party officials.

PHOENIX, Ariz. – Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) collaborated with the local police, and  Arizona Attorney General’s Office for Operation Broken Hearts, as the week long sting operation began in early February resulted in nearly 40 arrests of suspected child predators:

“This multiagency operation is just one of many examples that underscores the importance of working together with our local and state law enforcement partners to take these alleged predators off the streets,” said Scott Brown, special agent in charge for HSI Phoenix.
“The relentless work by all resulted in an impressive number of arrests. We will continue our unwavering commitment to serve and protect our community against anyone seeking to sexually exploit our most vulnerable population.”

Operation Broken Hearts was an undercover operation targeting sexual predators engaged in child sex crimes and human trafficking, during which officers and undercover detectives placed ads on websites and apps which are commonly sought out by suspects seeking illegal sex acts with children. These 37 suspects solicited and/or brokered deals for various sex acts and were subsequently arrested.

Texas wildlife and other southern neighbors has been battered by the once-in-a-century winter storm which crippled the region:

“[Bats] burned through their energy reserves as they tried to wake up and get away from the cold and ice. And there aren’t any insects out there for them to eat yet,” said Kate Rugroden, an Arlington-based rehabilitation specialist, told AP, as she described a effort to save the winged creatures.

“Animals can respond to events like this by moving elsewhere, but if it’s beyond your flight range or your walking range you have to hunker down,” Dr. Perry Barboza, a wildlife specialist from Texas A&M University, explained.

“Some animals like small birds can do it just a night or two. The duration becomes the killer,” he said.

Volunteers have done what they can to save animal populations and tide them over until the storm passes. Last week, media reported a large-scale effort to save over 2,500 stunned sea turtles on Texas’ South Padre Island and relocate them to makeshift shelters.
